Every agency out there must form a budget to operate day to day. This week, our team has chosen the FBI, the DEA, and the TSA as our federal agencies to research their budget.The FBI, (Federal Bureau of Investigation) the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) and the TSA (Transportation Security Agency) is no different, they must make budgets for their agencies to make sure that they stay operating correctly.In this paper, we will describe briefly the purpose of the agency along with the different budgets for each agency.

Job of the DEA, FBI, & TSA

The job of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction.(United States Drug Enforcement Agency.) (N.D.).

The FBI’s job is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners; and to perform these responsibilities in a manner that is responsive to the needs of the public and is faithful to the Constitution of the United States. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) was created not long after the attacks of September 11, 2001. The Job of the TSA is to protect the nation’s transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce. (Department of Homeland Security TSA.) (N.D.). Believe it or not, the TSA has an array of different jobs ranging from security to doctors, as well as lawyers.

Types of Budgets

For one to understand the budgets of the FBI, DEA, and TSA, one must first understand the types of budgets that exist. There are five main types of budgets which include: master budget, operational budget, cash flow budget, financial budget, and static budget.

The master budget is an overall budget of how the management of said organization plans to use the budget and conduct business for the current year. This can be presented monthly or a quarterly basis. A master budget makes the organization follow this budget to an absolute tee.

An operational budget, makes sure that revenues and expenses of business daily operation are covered. This type of budget includes any overhead that an organization might have. An operational budget can be assessed on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis.

Cash flow is a type of budget that estimates the flow of money both in and out on a certain time basis. This budget takes accounts receivable and payable into consideration.

A financial budget is used to gain a visual of the organizations monetary health. This means, it checks to see how well the budget is doing. This type of budget measures the organizations worth.

A static budget is a fixed budget that remains the same no matter the changes in revenue.

Budgets of the FBI, DEA, & TSA

Like any other agency all three of these agencies must have their annual budgets approved by not only their agencies, but also since theyall three belong to the federal government, they also must answer to the federal government. Since these agencies belong to the government, their budget effects the people of the United States of America.

The DEA has what is referred to as a two-party check. They must first go through the Department of justice, which is the agency that keeps the DEA in check, and they also must get their budget approved by Congress. Even though they answer to the DOJ (Department of Justice), they still must have their budget approved by both parties. (Department of Justice.) (N.D.).

The TSA also has a two-step process as well. They must first go to the Department of Homeland Security and then they go to the Senate appropriations committee. For Fiscal year 2017 the TSA requested $7.6 billion for the TSA. (Department of Homeland Security TSA.) (N.D.). Per Homeland Security (2017), the TSA has the highest budget due to the number of employees.

The FBI has a similar process as the other two agencies. They also have a two-party budget system. They must request their budget through the DOJ and then the Senate appropriations committee. For the Fiscal year 2017 the FBI requested $9.50 billion for their annual budget. FBI.gov. (February 25, 2016). Each one of these agencies have their mission and each one of them serve a specific purpose to keep the citizens of this country safe, sometimes they work together to keep us safe.

Conclusion

With almost any organization, there must be some sort of set budget. Our team researches The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Transportation Services Agency to understand their budget better. All three organizations fall under the federal government, but all three had differing budgets.
