Week 3

Business and Society

In today’s world there are a lot of people out there looking for employers that fit their needs and there once. In a recent study Gallup found only 40% of American workers are completely satisfied with their jobs and another study found that 21% of employees had Applied to another job in the past six months Who is ever changing environment companies have two major questions that they need to solve first how do you make American workers look at you as a good employer? And even more importantly how do you make current employees stay with you? When a company becomes an employer of choice this means the applicants are eager to work for you and that people envy your employees and you start receiving unsolicited resumes. On top of that the employers most talented workers stay with the company throughout their careers. (1)Tim Baker did some research in the Training Journal and came up with eight values that employee and employer shared. And they were flexible deployment, customer focus, performance focused, project-based work, human spirit and work, commitment, learning and developing and open information.(2)

When it comes to two different companies that stand out as good examples of employers of choice I’m going to use AT&T and Verizon as my two companies to compare. When you look at these two companies from the outside they seem similar and customers look at them is similar in nature. When it comes to them as employers they both used two different strategies to attract great employees. Let’s look at Verizon’s strategy they look for employees that believe in sharing success with the community and that will help make the world a better place to live as well as work in. Verizon also strives itself to be a company that that is well diverse by hiring a very well diverse workforce they are looking for the best employees and engineering, legal professionals as well as scientist. Rison feels that by having this kind of hiring diverse city will help attract and keep a diverse pool of talent for a long time. Verizon also has a policy that encourages their employees to donate their money. Verizon will match dollar for dollar up to $1000 every 12 months that and employee donates back into the community. Having this type of corporate social responsibility he allows and empowers employees to have a positive impact on their community this also has a positive impact on improving the employer of choice at Verizon.(3)

When it comes to the AT&T company the way they approach scoring high as an employee of choice has come to understand and gain the knowledge that a various, Gifted and committed employees are significant to their success. The company is at the top when it comes to offering an inclusive work environment and delivering an efficiency awards as well as developing a culture of excellence. They also pride them self in recruiting certified and talented staff with disability is one of their main essential factors of being a diverse in their management and company.

Even though these two companies arrivals in the marketplace there’s a lot that they can learn from one another. Let’s take AT&T’s policy for hiring people with disabilities Verizon could take that same policy as an award incentive and give their employees a hiring bonus for every able and qualify disabled person they help recruit to work at Verizonthis would stand out more as an employer of choice with in the community. AT&T could definitely add a policy where they empower and encourage their employees to donate and give back to their communities more as well as match what they donate.

If I had to choose which company to work for it as my employer of choices it would be AT&T. The reason why I say this is because the current company I work for main mission is to help find jobs for people with significant disabilities. Just seeing the joy on their faces when they get their first job ever and how hard they work to accomplish that job is all I need to feel good about myself every day. Because when Isee people with disabilities work three times harder than those without disabilities. So with AT&T having that has one of their policies just makes me want to join and help spread that positive encouragement of hiring people with disabilities. The finally reason I would work for AT&T is as myself having a disability I know how important it is to work for a company that wants you to be there and tries to empower you to work. As well as give you opportunity to be promoted and move up the corporate ladder and does not use your disability against you.
