In my chosen profession as an active US military member, strategic management by definition is one of the most key elements to the success of our organization. One could easily see how strategic management applies to the military profession as strategic management is the art and science of formulating, implementing, and evaluating cross functional decisions in order to enable an organization to achieve its objectives. At the very core of everything we do in the military, no matter the job, the goal is to achieve our objective, both within our field and overall to the military. There are countless career fields and professions within the military and each plays its own key role in ensuring that the mission is accomplished. While each field is different, we are required and expected to work together by doing our individual part in order to support one another. To do this requires a great deal of strategic management, strategic planning, and synergy to ensure that all objectives and goals are met. The military profession differs from the typical business world in that our organization can be much more broad in terms of what we are trying to achieve whether it be providing medical care for military members and their families, repairing facilities, providing relief and aid to countries in need, fixing and maintaining aircraft, performing flying operations, all the way up to eliminating and destroying strategic military objectives both on the ground and in the air. Each and every aspect and decision must be considered and managed to enable our organization to achieve its overall goal. Military members are expected to, within reason, handle everything possible at the lowest level possible. Just like in business, not every member of the military will make it to the highest levels and every decision and task cannot be brought to these levels. It is important for every member at all levels to understand their role in the strategic management process and why it matters both to them and the organization.
