As an active military member in the US Air Force, the company that I currently work for is not so much a company or a business, but is a very large organization that does in fact have a mission statement. The, what you would call a mission statement for the US Air Force, is as follows:
The mission of the United States Air Force is to fly, fight, and win in air, space and cyberspace. Our rich history and our vision guide our Airmen as we pursue our mission with excellence and integrity to become leaders, innovators and warriors.
I do believe the mission statement that the Air Force uses is an effective one. As companies use mission statements as a declaration of being or as a means to define their business, the Air Force is using their mission statement to do so in much the same way, only not-for-profit or not within the business world. The Air Forces mission statement clearly defines the overall mission of the organization and defines priorities in terms of who we are and what we aim to become. The Air Forces mission statement is one that evokes inspiration and generates a positive image of the organization; which are two important aspects of a well-crafted mission statement.
