Unit 5 Journal

Refer back to your last performance appraisal; what did you like about the process? What would you change about the process? Do you think the performance appraisal is helpful and still needed? Please explain. If you have never experienced a performance appraisal, discuss your thoughts on the importance of a performance appraisal.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

The last performance appraisal I had was in August of 2019. In the Army, our performance appraisals, or performance evaluations, are done every year. This can be done more often given different circumstances that may arise. Our evaluations are called Noncommissioned Officer Evaluation Report (NCOER) for Enlisted, and Officer Evaluation Report (OER) for Officers. This determined our performance in the following areas:

1. Character

2. Presence

3. Intellect

4. Leads

5. Develops

6. Achieves

7. Raters Performance Evaluations

The process is good overall and depending on how you do over the course of the year, it can make or break your career and promotion capabilities, just like the civilian side. The issue with this is that the person being evaluated usually writes their own evaluation and then the supervisor is the one who finishes it and signs, so a true evaluation can be hard to capture and can be misleading if the person being evaluated writes it. Usually the ones that write their own evaluation are the ones that are not honest with themselves. This is a process that I do not like. I would take away the capability of having the evaluated person have access to the system that write the evaluation. The access that would be granted would be only for the supervisor and only read-only rights for the evaluated individual. This would minimize the amount of dishonest evaluations within the Army. The performance appraisals are needed to find the flaws and to help fix issues. It helps people higher up the leadership ladder knows who they are looking at when determining senior level promotions.
