The overall concepts that I have learned within this course will be beneficial to me now, and even more when I enter the civilian workforce. As a Human Resources Soldier in the U.S. Army, there are a lot of concepts that are treated a little differently than what we have learned, like the pay-for-performance benefit that organizations often offer their employees. When we do a good job in the military, we may get a “good job,” and then we move on to the next mission. We don’t necessarily get anything special or get a higher pay bonus or anything like that. Now, the civilian side may get a small one-time bonus for their performance. Now, before I did join the military, I did sit down with a recruiter and he talked me through all the benefits that I would be given and what the description of the jobs I was interested in at the time. That was part of the hiring process that I had learned in this course, and there are some things that I would like to change in the Army, but that would have to go all the way through the government. My job description for when new recruits join is a little off, and not as accurate. It needs to be re-looked. As I go up higher in the leadership ladder, knowing the executive powers is important. In unit 7 we learned about the special groups and what benefits they have. We also learned about laws and regulations that are important to executive leadership and why. There is a lot more involved in being a leader than just doing more work. Knowing the laws and being morally correct and having ethics within the workplace is extremely important. The civilian sector will be harder to transition into for me because the military doesn’t discriminate with pay in any way due to one set standard. We pay for rank, and nothing more. The civilian side pays for experience, tenure and performance. So, knowing that I will have to keep a watchful eye with the performance evaluations of my team when I transition over to keep an honest evaluation on not be bias toward anyone. Treat everyone equally no matter the gender or race. This class has helped me a lot in preparation for the civilian HR workforce.
