BHR 4680 Unit II Assessment – Question 1

QUESTION 1

There are various reasons why training is needed. Identify some causes, and pick one to explain in detail.

According to the textbook, the reasons training may be needed are as follows: legislation, lack of basic skills, poor performance, new technology, customer requests, changes in products and services, higher performance standards, new job, customer dissatisfaction, to improve quality, and to reduce scrap (Noe, 2020). Sometimes the needs for training overlap. My personal experience of such an overlap was in my previous role at ADP, Inc.: when the Affordable Care Act (ACA) first became law, ADP had to train employees in the new legislation and technology had to be updated to incorporate the ACA requirements. The organization first determined which employee’s jobs were impacted by this change and then administered training on the legislative aspect to ensure that employees were able to be compliant with the Affordable Care Act and also provided training on the updated software that now included ACA reporting. I was implementing new payroll clients, setting up their payroll software and advising them of best practices regarding the setup. Because payroll directly impacts the ACA requirements, I was trained on the system updates and received in-depth training to be able to advise the client accordingly. Due to the in-depth training I received, I became a subject matter expert and passed on that knowledge to other employees. As a designated subject matter expert, or SME, employees were able to to reach out to me directly with specific questions or for clarification.
