Journal Reflection BOS 3001 Unit II

For this journal entry, I was asked to reflect on my current work environment and discuss a work-related accident that occurred, my thoughts on the accident and whether or not the accident was preventable.

My current work environment as an instructor for a professional military education course in the Air Force named Airman Leadership School is not related to the occupational safety environment and there haven’t been any work-related accidents, so I will reflect on an earlier assignment in which I was working in my primary career field. The time I am thinking back to was when I was stationed at the U.S. Air Force Academy. One of the primary accidents that would happen in our medical facility was needle sticks. These accidents would occur mainly in the dental clinic of our facility. Every employee was required to have initial training on the potential for needle sticks and were aware of the potential for them to occur. These accidents were preventable in nature and usually happened with a combination of carelessness and rushing during procedures on the part of the dental technician. When these incidents would occur, we would have to bring in both the person that was stuck and the technician and run a few lab tests on them. We would make sure the technician received extra training and we would keep in contact with both members and have them return in 90 days for follow-up testing.
