Collect tools and ladder a. may strain back from lifting heavy tool bagb. may strain back from improper lifting of ladder Using administrative controls such as training on proper lifting technique will help remove potential risk for back strainsUsing PPE such as back braces will help reduce risk of back injury steel toe boots will reduce risk of foot injury
Uninstall current whiteboards a. board could fall and injure leg or foot Using administrative controls such as training on proper lifting technique and training on two-man teams will help remove risk.Using PPE such as back braces will help reduce risk of back injury steel toe boots will reduce risk of foot injury
Unpack new smartboards a. boards could be dropped on someone’s hand footb. could cut hand on sharp edgesc. could damage the smartboard Using administrative controls such as training on proper lifting technique and training on two-man teams will help remove risk.Using PPE such as back braces will help reduce risk of back injury steel toe boots will reduce risk of foot injury, use of gloves will help reduce risk of hand injuries
Measure smartboards for clamp/bracket placement a. could cut hands on measuring tapeb. could fall from ladderc. ladder could buckle Using administrative controls such as training on proper use of tools can help reduce risk of injury and training on proper two-man teams and holding the ladder will help remove risk falling from the ladder.Using PPE such as gloves will help reduce risk of hand injuries
Install smartboard clamps/brackets a. hands could be punctured or cut with toolsb. could fall from ladderc. ladder could buckled. dust could blow into an eye Using administrative controls such as training on proper use of tools can help reduce risk of injury and training on proper two-man teams and holding the ladder will help remove risk falling from the ladder.Using PPE such as gloves will help reduce risk of hand injuries, proper us of eye protection can help reduce the risk for eye injury
Connect smartboard to clamps/brackets a. board could be dropped on feet or legsb. hands or fingers could be smashed or crushedc. could damage the smartboard Using administrative controls such as training on proper lifting technique and training on two-man teams will help remove risk of injury.Using PPE such as back braces will help reduce risk of back injury steel toe boots will reduce risk of foot injury, use of gloves will help reduce risk of hand injuries

To complete this Job Hazard Assessment, I had to look at the task the was being conducted (replacing white boards) in a step by step manner. I broke the task down into what the actual steps were taken then looked at each step and identified possible risks or hazards that had the potential for occurring. After assessing each potential hazard, I looked at the controls that could be taken to prevent any risk of injury from that step. Since this was a pretty simple task overall the steps, the hazards, and the controls were all at a low level of ease. The overall task of replacing our whiteboards with smartboards was simple in nature but with the lack of proper safety management could have had the potential to have some serious injuries. The majority of the injuries would have come from improper lifting technique, improper use of a ladder, improper use of tools, and improper use of personal protective equipment. As can be seen above the primary controls used for each hazard using the Hierarchy of Controls method were use of administrative controls such as training in lifting technique, two-person teams, ladder usage, tool usage, and proper use of personal protective equipment such as back braces, gloves, steel toe boots and eye protection.
