Journal Reflection BOS 3001 Unit III

For this journal entry, I was asked to reflect any incentive programs my current or past employer(s) have had. Then reflect and ask myself if the program discouraged reporting of workplace injuries and accidents? Lastly, I was asked to discuss and provide examples to support my answer.

Thinking back over the years there was only one location that I was assigned to that had an incentive program for safety. Looking back over the years and locations I have been at there have always been plenty of safety programs but they never offered any incentives for practicing safety, it was expected and enforced with either verbal or written discipline based on the severity of the safety incident. The one location I was at that did have a safety incentive program was the 10th Medical Group at the USAF Academy. The incentive program was actually really inventive and encouraged reporting of safety incidents and work place accidents. The whole thing was based on getting extra time for lunch or days off. You would receive a token or “Safety POG” for every incident that you reported. One token was worth an extra hour on your lunch break or you could save them up and receive a day off this required eight tokens. Most people used their token for lunch because they had to be used within the year the incident was reported and it was rare to report multiple accident within a work section. The reason this was a successful incentive was due to the extra time received. Our leadership understood that the their two most valuable assets were people and their time so giving time back to them for reporting accidents was only going to benefit the mission in the end. Employees were encouraged to report these incidents no matter the size because they were receiving a positive reaction rather than a negative reaction.
