The fatality rate in construction is higher due to the work that’s being performed. Some of the potential hazards for workers are excavations, electric shock, PPE and scaffolding. Excavations improper trenching and shoring can lead to collapses of the trench. Electric shock can results in not having proper lock out/ tag out program, tools that are not properly grounded and frayed or damaged wires or cables. PPE is the most obvious with general contractor’s lack of eyes, ears, and toe protection does count for the majority of accident by them. Another is Scaffolding not having a competent person building and inspecting them can cause accident, along with open hold in the flooring, and excess materials on them can cause fall objects and weight limitations. The construction fatality rate is higher than other industries mostly because of lack of safety knowledge and unskilled labor.

  1. Imagine you are the supervisor of a construction crew in which half of the workers speak only limited English. What steps should you take to ensure everyone is equally protected?

When I was working in construction we had this problem about a quarter of the employees spoke limit English. What management did was they selected the one who was the most knowledgeable of construction and spoke English fluently to help bridge the gap between limited English. After we selected the right person we trained him on construction safety and how to relate potential hazards to the workers. Also we started posting signs along with pictures in English and Spanish so everyone can be aware the dangers and notifications of the construction site.

Workers’ compensation insurance is purchased by employers for the coverage of employment-related injuries and illnesses. It’s designed to cover injuries that result from employees’ or employers’ carelessness. In general, an employee with a work-related illness or injury can get workers’ compensation benefits regardless of who was at fault, the employee, the employer, or a coworker.

  1. Explain the rationale for workers’ compensation. What are the objectives of workers’ compensation? Who is covered by this program, and how does it help prevent future accidents?

Your essay should be at least 200 words in length and include an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

Works’ compensation is a no fault law, it means that it doesn’t matter who is at fault either the employer or the employee. For example, a worker who rushing to do his job before the end of shift over looks safety procedures and injures his back by lifting a more than the required amount set by the company. The results of the injury are the worker is out for months.

The objectives of workers’ compensation laws should cover most occupations or job-related accidents and disease. Another is to provide substantial protection against the loss of income. The benefits are designed to restore a some proportion of the worker’s lost earnings, so that the worker can maintain a life of living. Also,it provide sufficient medical care and rehabilitation services to injured workers. Workers’ compensation laws require employers to pay hospital, surgical, and other medical costs incurred by injured workers and provide for rehabilitation services to disabled employees to help them be restored to productive employment.

Under the worker’s compensation most employees are covered. There are few workers that are not cover such as independent contractors, farmers and farmhands and business owners. Workers’ compensation is to help companies to reduce job-related accidents and to establish safety programs. Companies with accident records pay relatively lower workers’ compensation premiums because experience rating is used to encourage firms to reduce job-related accidents and disease. It help prevent future accidents by establishing safety programs and finding key problems in the company’s work procedures to limit work related injuries.

Having worker’s compensation benefits both employer and employee. This help employer to establish better safety program, also to cut down on insurance cost and provide better working condition for employees. As the employee it helps them when they are in an accident to provide medical and financial coverage when they are out on disability. Workers compensation is something that is needed to benefits both employers and employees to ensure fairness in the work place.
