Unit V Journal Reflection

For this journal entry, I am being asked to review Appendix A of OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard 29 CFR 1910.119 and determine if my workplace has any chemicals that exceed the Threshold Quantity (TQ) identified in this table. After that reflect on how my workplace uses aspects of the PSM to ensure a safe workplace? Do I think that the measures at your workplace achieve safety or merely keep the facility in compliance?

I almost felt like I was getting an advantage for this journal entry due to the job I currently have and the type of work that I do. My workplace doesn’t have any chemicals that we use in our facility. My job is purely administrative. I instruct an Air Force leadership course and the only chemical type products that we use are disinfectant wipes for cleaning our desks. I reviewed the safety data sheet for these wipes and none of the chemicals contained within it were listed in Appendix A. All of the cleaning in the facility is contracted out and those employees bring all chemicals with them and then take them with them when they leave. All though we do not use chemicals we do have a written plan that covers the possible use of cleaning chemicals if needed at any time. It is not as detailed as what is described in Appendix A of OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard 29 CFR 1910.119 but then again there are very little to no reasons anyone in my workplace would need to use any chemicals. As stated in the purpose of this standard outlines requirements for preventing or minimizing catastrophic releases of toxic, reactive, flammable, or explosive chemicals, (OSHA). Based on the purpose of this standard and the nature of my job and workplace this standard would not apply. I think that the where I work and the work, I do make it simple for my work center achieve a safe atmosphere and stay within compliance.
