What is active learning? How could active learning principles be applied in a safety training course on machine guarding?

Active learning is where instructors try to involve students in the learning more than any other teaching method. An example given in our text book (Hazard Prevention through Effective Safety and Health Training) was The Motorcycle Safety Foundation holding a motorcycle rider course where the instructor was more of a coach rather than a teacher to the students and also required the them to lead their own learning through hands-on riding of the motorcycle to learn how to use it, Haight, 2012). Active learning can be applied to a safety training course on machine guarding by using a similar method described above where the instructor coaches the learner through the process while letting them learn by doing. This is similar to the on the job training method were the instructor takes the students out of the classroom to actually use the machine and go through the steps of machine guarding with them. This does two things firstly it gives the student all the instructions at a reasonable speed that can be adjusted to their learning ability and secondly it will give them the ability to practice hands-on training that is experience that they can refer back to for future usage.

What is peer learning? Describe how peer learning could be used in classroom training and in computer or Internet-based training.

Based on my reading and research peer learning is essentially learning where the students learn both with and from other learners. Peer learning can be used effectively in a classroom setting when used appropriately. The best way to get peer learning in a classroom setting is by using the guided discussion method. This method is where the instructor poses a question or questions on a subject or topic to a classroom of learners and the learners offer out insights their personal knowledge, thus teaching their peers. Classroom learning is a good way of training for companies because it is cheaper and easier to maintain.

The peer learning methodology can also be used in a computer or internet based training just as effectively with the updates in technology. By using chatrooms or by connecting to online conferences learners can be linked into a learning session and never be in the same place as their peers. The same concept would be used as listed above. The learners would complete the training and be learning from each other. There are also computer training programs that companies can purchase to accomplish peer learning for their employees. This option makes it easy for companies to complete training at their convenience.

Peer learning is when each learner has information that can increase productivity were it is known by all learners.
