“Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or bring Your Own Technology (BYOT)” Please respond to the following:

With the proliferation of smart phones and intelligent computing tablets such as the iPad, enterprises are increasingly faced with employees who want to bring their own devices and connect to enterprise systems. Determine whether or not employers should allow this type of connectivity to enterprise systems. Support your reasoning with three examples. Predict the impact to an organization’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) when employees use BYOD.

An employer should allow BYOD to be connected to enterprise systems. In business today BYOD provides flexibility, increases productivity, and gives employees more of an incentive to be willing to work after office hours. A company needs to have a strong policy in place and require employees to login to a centralized organizational network (ie. VPN) when permitting employees to utilize BYOD. When employees use BYOD the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for the organization can be lower if they require their employees to purchase their own laptops and/or mobile devices with the required anti-virus software. Depending on the size of an organization the cost saving could in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“From the e-Activity, determine whether Strayer University should allow students to use BYOD on campus. Explain why or why not”

I believe Strayer University should allow students to utilize BYOD on campus. Since it is a learning environment BYOD gives students the ability to study and find information from devices they are more familiar with. BYOD also allows students to create and utilize their own study files, which is a huge benefit for the student.

Suggest how an organization should choose between Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Support your recommendation with an explanation.

SaaS services offers applications that are hosted over the Internet. The service utilizes standardized software that is not customized. Additionally, an organization will not have to install software and there is no required major installation. An organization typically pays the provider for the service monthly. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a classification of cloud computing which offers a stage and atmosphere to permit designers to create applications and services over the internet. PaaS allow customers to pick and choose the services they want and disregard the ones they don’t. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is the ability to programmatically create, manage and consume infrastructure elements which include images, storage volumes, network and compute resources (Fork,2014). IaaS offers scalability, no cost for hardware, and no single point of failure. I believe an organization should choose IaaS because of its high scalability that will allow an organization to utilize resources when needed. As technology continues to change I believe IaaS would be the best option for an organization to keep up with the changes.

Salesforce.com, Facebook, Gmail, Windows Azure, Apple iTunes, and LinkedIn are examples of applications in the cloud computing space. Examine the benefits and possible problems for these organizations when it comes to cloud computing. Propose solutions to these problems. Predict the impact to an organization’s TCO and ROI.

The benefits of cloud computing are that it offers flexibility, scalability, cost, and maintenance. Data control is an area of concern in cloud deployments. Data comes into the provider from different ways with some data belonging to others. Companies need to have confidence their provider will offer appropriate control, while recognizing the need to adapt their expectations for how much control is reasonable within these models. The loss of physical control of their data can cause concern. Another area of concern in cloud computing is the overall security. A company is reliant on the security provided by the cloud service provider. Another challenge can be keeping up with security updates as threats constantly change and can become more sophisticated. The TCO for an organization will be based on its requirements and can change if it adds or takes away different components. Its ROI will be centered on the monthly price being paid to the provider for the cloud service, which should not change.

Cloud computing can reduce IT costs by using the resources of the cloud computing service provider. Expensive equipment and systems will no longer need to be purchased as operating costs can be reduced. The scalability of the organization’s storage needs can be reduced while allowing flexibility as the needs for change present itself. The impact on an organization’s TCO can change as it adds complexity to the cloud as a function or alternative. The impact to the organization’s ROI can distort the marketing value that is being delivered. This transpires into the financial performance as well for the organization if the marketing context is not applied correctly.

Cloud computing is a very fast growing today. No doubt that it had helped a lot the organization, by having worry free from dealing with the hardware installment and repair. That saves the organization a lot to shift all of those tasks to the third party who would be in charge of hosting and maintaining the data center for the organization and that is great for the organization (TCO). But it still have some problems like vendor lockout, or having the clients suffering from transferring service or data due to any technical issue caused by the third party. And the main concern that is still considered the main obstacle for any organization is the security. Having the data stored offsite. Is a risk, and for many critical type of business that has very sensitive information, this is high risk that prevent them from using this service. So paying the cost of having central server and host on site will be much better for this type of business. Because the major (ROI) for the organization is mainly its data value not the money return
