Ethical and Socially Responsive Business

Businessesmust set many standards to ensure that the business is successful. A code of conduct is used in most businesses to highlight their expectations.“A code of conduct is a formal, written document that defines the ethical standards of an organization and gives employees the information they need to make ethical decisions across a range of situations.” Kelly, McGowen & Williams (2014). It is very important that everyone within a business follow and adhere to a company’s’ code of conduct. “While the primary goal of all businesses is to be profitable, they must also promote ethical and social responsibility throughout their organizations and their corresponding customer and supplier networks.” Kelly, McGowen &Williams. (2014). Vision statement, anti-discrimination and employee harassment are some of the main elements of Chipotles’ code of conduct.

A business’ vision statement lays out the most important primary goals for a company. “Chipotle is a company based on Integrity. Integrity is about being real and being honest. It means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. These values permeate the way we do, and do not do business.”(Integrity Statement)(August 31 2013).

Chipotles’ code of conduct is very important because it highlights Chipotles’ dedication to animportant business ethic. Honesty. Honesty is essential in any business environment because it keep things within stance.

Another key element of Chipotles’ code of conduct is The Anti-Discrimination and Harassment Policies. It is the law for all employers to adhere to these policies. Failure to adhere to thesepoliciescan result in potential lawsuits. According to Kelly, McGowen & Williams, (2014) “the starting point for socially responsible employers is to meet all legal standards and the requirements are significant”. (p.264).

There are many approaches that Chipotle could take to ensure that employees are following the code of conduct. Having an open door policy for any employee to report if he/she feels that another employee is in violation of the code of conduct. Keeping in mind that any information provided is confidential. Another way would be to make it an automatic termination for any employee found in violation of the code of conduct. Lastly, impose serious consequences’ for all employees that is found in violation. These methods would ensure that all employees’ are following the code of conduct because it would deter any employee from being in violation.

Genuine social responsibility focuses on how the organization benefits society. (Walton, 2010). Chipotle can engage in socially responsive activities in the community by having a day where kids eat free. Having a day where kids eat free would let the community know that chipotle cares about our future. Another way would be to feed the homeless. By feeding the homeless, any extra food that is not needed will not go to waste. Not only is the extra food not

going to be wasted, but it will feed someone that may not know where their next meal is coming from. Chipotle is greatly known for giving back to their community.Lastly, being active in
