When sustaining a business I will discuss the difference between Destroy Your Business (DYB) and Grow Your Business (GYB) over long term in the marketplace and how to remain profitable and competitive amongst other businesses. I will explore the “cannibalization” approach and determine whether or not it should be chosen over the DYB approach in reference to competition, growth and market leadership. I will analyze if changes within a business strategy should be reassessed in Information Systems. Lastly I will discuss the use of social information technology (IT) along with organizational strategy and information systems strategy in order to determine the collaborative possibilities.

In order for organizations to remain stable, strategies need to be developed to help them adapt to their competitors in a climate that is uncompromising and cutthroat. The first strategy is Destroy Your Business. This method examines the organization from an internal standpoint, searching for vulnerabilities the competition can use against its competitor or use to advance in a specific market. Performing this research internally will identify weaknesses. Once the vulnerabilities have been detected, a team can move forward in developing a process that mitigates those vulnerabilities and identifies target areas to focus on in order to either, erase or modify the identified weaknesses. At this point an organization can move forward to work on methods that focus on the growth of business. This process is called Grow Your Business.

A plan must be developed to innovate the organization from the research discovered in the DYB approach. Proper strategic planning helps to understand how the information systems and information technology can support a new structure for the organization in the future. Plans may consist of showcasing a new product or developing ways to promote a larger consumer base. DYB helps organizations figures out their weakness, whereas GYB helps an organization enhance their strengths, eliminates their weaknesses and take the organization to the next level.

When an organization explores cannibalization, they are competing with themselves in the market. If an organization decides to participate in cannibalization, they will produce a new product or service that is anticipated to have greater returns than the current product that they have on the market. The organization will lose shares in the market, but they will not lose to competitors. There are a few things to keep in mind when introducing a new product. They are market research, customer loyalty, product lifecycle, investments and product demand.

Looking at the Nike brand and Car manufacturers are great examples of this strategy. The Nike brand is constantly releasing new versions of a shoe. They will lower the cost of older versions and release a newer version. The sales of the older versions will decrease gaining more profits, while the latest versions of the shoes will also boost sales. Car manufacturers also use this strategy when releasing a newer model of their vehicle. The costs of older vehicles depreciate, while the new models bring in more revenue. Personally, I believe the DYB and GYB strategies are better than the cannibalization strategy. An organization can invest their money on improving their product and practices instead of wasting money having multiple products on the market at one time. Each strategy works for every organization differently.

To remain relevant, organizations need to constantly perform information systems assessments annually. The IT infrastructure changes frequently and support systems need updates on a consistent bases in order for businesses to stay competitive. An example of this occurs when new operating systems are created. The world continues to evolve and grow. If an organization does not stay current, they will definitely fall behind their competitors who have upgraded their operating system, and equipment to remain marketable. It is imperative that organizations are flexible. Upgrading physical equipment will assist in training their employees and keeping them engaged. This updates their resources and promotes relevance of the organization for upward movement.

In today’s society, an organization must engage in social media across several platforms to remain competitive. These platforms can promote sales and also assist in providing employment for the younger generations that are well versed in the area. There are many collaborative assets of social media that increase the consumer base, and popularity of an organization. Organizations are able to share information instantly regardless of where a customer is in the world. Social media will also enhance customer service by allowing customers to communicate directly with the business of their interest. The return on investment of using social media will always be great, due to the massive amounts of people you can reach, just from the palm of your hand. It allows businesses to grow and operate outside of its immediate location. The use of social media will also give an organization instant feedback of their products, which will help making the company better in the long run.

There are several business strategies that can build organizations effectiveness. Information systems are a necessity for any business to be successful. Social medial is also monumental when running any business in today’s world. Information can be lost, as well as revenue and consumer base if an organization ignores information systems. Organizations need to maximize the use of information technology to remain relevant and grow with the world of tomorrow.
