Parent and Family Involvement

Parent and family involvement is very significant and should be encouraged on a daily base. It can sometimes be hard to get parents and family to get involved because all most every body in the house is working doing school hours I would make sure I have something open for the weekend when the parents are off work so that the whole family can get involved, But as long as am trying and encouraging the parent and family to be involved, I am making a difference in a child life. I plan to include my students; families and parent’s in everything we do at school. Whether its story time, science day, field trips, nutrition day, activity to stay fit, or a holiday my classroom door will be open to the families at all times. Family and parents of my students are a main focal point because they need to be involved in their children’s school life and know what’s going on with there child on a daily base. In this paper I will talk about and explain how I plan to involve and encourage parents’ and explain the six types of parent and family involvement. The six types of parent and family involvement are parenting knowledge and skills, communication between the home and school, volunteering at the school and in the community, supporting student learning at home, involvement in decision making and advocacy, and collaboration with the community.

Parenting knowledge and skills assist families with parenting skills and setting home conditions to support children as students and also assist schools to better understand families. (Epstein, Joyce, 2002) My classroom will always be family oriented and at the beginning of the year I would sit with the families and find out information about their children so I will be able to make the child feel as comfortable as possible in my classroom. I will encourage parents to join the O.P.T committee and the meetings to let the family know what are the school and classroom’s policies, rules, procedures and programs available and what the school have to offer to there child I will give parents and other family member’s dutys as classroom aides, club and activity sponsors, curriculum planners, and policy decision makers, when parents and other family members are viewed as experts, empowerment results. (Morrison, 2009) I will also encourage all parents to join the classroom to see what we do and how their child interacts with others. Even if it’s just for story time, science day, or a holiday party event. One thing that my classroom will do is every week go to the library and pick a book to be sent home to be shared with the family to read and every week they will bring it back to exchange it for a new one and tell what they have read and was it shared with the family it would be a family project.

With communicating between home and school you would conduct effective communications from school-to-home and from home-to-school about school programs and student progress. (Epstein, Joyce, 2002) As a teacher I would like to implement a subject planner system, where the child would take a planner home with them each day. In the planner I would write the parent a little note about what the child did in school, what they ate, and any problems or concerns the child had during the day any homework they may have had that week. Then the parent could respond and discuss any concerns they have or just sign their name letting me know they got the note. Having plays, award day, special parties throughout the year will also help bring parents to the school to be involved. Having parents volunteer for activities and doing things like babysitting or bringing a snack in for the class will help get parents and families involved. It allows parents to find a babysitter for their child and also helps out in the classroom. Having home visits at least twice a year to see how the child lives and interacts at home is also a key thing. I would bring an activity to the home to do with the child and the rest of the family getting to talk to the parents about how their child is doing and if they have any concerns about there learning process.

Volunteering at school and in the community organizes volunteers and audiences to support the school and students and provide volunteer opportunities in various locations and at various times. (Epstein, Joyce, 2002) Having people volunteer to babysit during certain functions make it easier for the families to enjoy events. At the event have a room with volunteers where the kids can go and play or draw while the adults enjoy what is going on. Service exchanges for example, one parent might provide transportation in exchange for having her washing machine repaired. I would also contact or have someone from the school contact the family before upcoming events or something they signed up for and send news letters home or have them mailed to the home.

Supporting student learning at home involves families as participants in school decisions, and develops parent leaders and representatives. (Epstein, Joyce, 2002) Making books or any other materials available to parents to use at home is important aspect to having a child learn better. If a parent has questions or concerns about how to teach their child at home or techniques to get them to do their homework, I will make myself available to give options to follow through with at home. Also letting the parents know of different educational websites that the child can go onto at home to help them learn would be beneficial also to get involved with the grandparent after school hotline they help children with home work and help them feel safe tell they mother get home from work.

Involvement in decision making and advocacy coordinate resources and services from the community for families, students, and the school, and provide services to the community. (Epstein, Joyce, 2002) Having parent’s active in the decision makings at school is a good way to get parents involved been on the P.O.T committee is a good place to start Letting them organize fundraisers, carnivals and other things lets them make decisions for the school that will be beneficial. They can get donations and have raffles of different things to raise money for the school or an activity the school is doing. Parents and community members can and should serve on committees that hire staff and set policy (Morrison, 2009).
