Journal Reflection SOC 1010 Unit 1

For this journal entry, I was asked what do I see as my biggest accomplishment in life so far? What people in my life were most directly responsible for helping make it happen? Given that we rely on others who are often unknown or invisible to us, what other people, groups, or institutions have made indirect but essential contributions to my success?

When I look over my life so far, I feel like I have done a few cool things and still feel like I have so much more left to do. As for my biggest accomplishment in life so far it would have to be achieving my current rank in the military. I have worked very hard over the years by putting in a lot of extra hours at work, sacrificing family time and studing my butt off to earn my rank. Even though I put in a lot I couldn’t have done it without the help from my wife Ashley and my two daughters Pheobe, and Annabeth. For the Air Force we have to take tests to gain our rank it is a little bit different than other services. My family assisted me in so many ways that I couldn’t list them all but mostly their support and love is what kept me focused on my task of passing the exams. As far as someone that had an indirect impact on my success I would have to list my father-in-law. I say this for the simple fact that when I was younger and prior to joining the Air Force I asked him for his daughter’s hand in marriage and he told me no, that I was not good enough for her and that I never would be good enough. I took that as a challenge and have been striving ever since to prove that I am good enough. He eventually gave me permission to marry his daughter and has since stated that he was wrong in his initial statements but I continue to use it as a driving force behind everything that I do. He will never know how much those words impacted my life and how I will never stop trying to prove him wrong.
