To Accept or Reject a Client

Over the years this has been a huge issues when it comes to baseball, with plenty of professional athletes using performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) or steroids. There have been tons of allegations where players have denied the use of PEDs until the results are published. It comes out to the public that the initial comments by the athletes were false that they didn’t use the banned substances. While others address the media once the organization becomes suspicious, addressing that they were taking the PEDs while others continue to deny use. Majority of the athletes have some sort of setback, with few having this scandal become career ending. Most instances the agent’s contact public relations professionals for assistance with media press and fixing the image of the athlete. Persuading the public when situations arise in the world is the objective of public relations writing. Theses public relations professionals must understand their limits and conduct business legally while utilizing ethics to prevent the tarnishing of their reputation along with the organization they are providing services for. It’s important in this job to do the right thing without going off course due to the fact it could affect your job and credibility no matter what the price offer is. So the selection of clients needs to be heavy scrutinized where you don’t put those factors at risk. With all these in mind when it comes down to taking on the account for this well-known baseball player, I would accept and provide my services for the client.

Once informed that there was a chance that the client may have taken something that would be consider steroids, it wouldn’t change my mind. You may ask why it wouldn’t change my mind, a lot of athletes are utilizing trainers that are passing them things to take for pain, recovery, or faster healing. These athletes are so pressed with time that they don’t ask questions and their trust is with that trainer. This trust could be the downfall of an athlete because there are times where people are in the ear of trainers to get the athlete back in game and recovered from injury. Step one would be to gather as much information as possible regarding the case leaving no stone unturned. Especially with something significant that could be unknown and come to light that could be damaging which is extremely vital. Starting my rough draft with all the collected facts ensuring I cover all areas that need to be addressed. Professional athletes are high visibility individuals so every detail needs to be accurate while being effective and significant to the issue brought to light. Targeting the audience that are sports fans, individuals that view the athlete as a role model and anyone who was directly impacted by the situation.

After getting my rough draft together I would call in the agent along with the client pitching how we would attack the issue at hand. “As part of the public relations writing strategy I would think first about the situation before I start writing” (Seitel, 2015). With the approval of the pitch we would then schedule a press conference to addressed the matter. In this press conference I would have my client speak with sincerity that the public will have belief that he didn’t do wrong but if he did have the substance unknowingly. Starting off with there was a possibility that he may have taken the substance and he apologies for not ensuring that the substance was an approved source. Then have him address his fans directly apologize to them for disappointing them and letting them while vowing to stay on the straight and narrow from this point on. Lastly have him address his team, managers, and the organization (MLB) apologizing directly to them. By showing regret he will save his image with his fans and club that he plays for.

The main ethical issue that I have a problem with is if the athlete willing took the substance while knowing it was on the banned and now just need the services to fix the problem to sustain his image. This would be the athlete not exercising transparency and honesty, that would be vital to this case and whether he could be properly assisted. Those two ethics would create a big problem for me personally, seeing that I would need these two to effective do my job assisting the client.

Finally pitching to my company to take the case would be so easy, with a loss it could definitely hurt the firm but not too much where it would have a huge affect. The upside which I could see as more of a benefit would be that our firm would be put in the spotlight assisting a high profile cased baseball player. Having him as a client this time fixing his image and preventing a PR nightmare would make him have us on call for future jobs. After winning the case it will bring more clients, which will bring more income to the company. With the pros outweighing the cons I would tell my company this is a case that we would be stupid not to take on.
