  • From this week’s video, provide your opinion on whether or not a non-Apple device user should have the ability to use iCloud. Explain whether or not this points to the limitations of cloud computing. Determine whether businesses should consider iCloud in their cloud computing strategy for their IT needs. Support your rationale.
    • Due to ever advancing technology capabilities I believe iCloud should be available to non-Apple devices. As it is, it is available to a Windows PC with the iCloud client. And though a bit more cumbersome, there are workarounds and applications that make it possible to use iCloud from Android devices. Because users are more likely to utilize more than one device and access data across those devices I believe it is necessary that non-Apple devices be able to use iCloud.
  • Rate the importance of establishing standards that govern the cloud infrastructure, format for data storage, interoperability standards between vendors, and security requirements. Support your rationale.
    • Establishing standards and security requirements within an organization is a must. When utilizing external vendors and data providers it is even more important because the organization no longer has physical access and control over their data. When utilizing more than one external provider or vendor it is crucial to ensure that security requirements match. Imagine one vendor having loose security requirements while the other is more stringent. It would be impossible to have data or processes cross the barrier from one to the other. This also opens the organization up to potential security threats.
Week 7 Discussion 2Post: RE: Week 7 Discussion 2Author: Instructor Manager Posted Date: February 18, 2017 12:13 PMStandards are an important consideration in many IT projects. Technology users, particularly businesses, often prefer to use products conforming to well-known technical standards. Standardized products may provide several benefits to users: price advantages and availability of substitutes due to competition. From a vendor’s perspective, the potential for competition is a disincentive to provide standardized products; however, vendors must balance the potential revenue benefits of proprietary products versus the potential for customers to prefer competing standardized products. Standardized products can follow a specific technical standard maintained by an organization such as ANSI or the ISO, or they can simply implement a commonly-used or familiar interface (de facto standards). Standards are closely related to lock-in. The Cloud Computing Interoperability Forum (CCIF) is an early industry coalition, including IBM, Sun, Cisco and Intel, focusing on standardization and interoperability issues. The CCIF mission statement summarizes their goals the CCIF will not condone any use of a particular technology for the purposes of market dominance and or advancement of any one particular vendor, industry or agenda. Whenever possible the CCIF will emphasis the use of open, patent-free and/or vendor-neutral technical solutions. Various major cloud providers and industry participants have different views on standards: Google, Amazon and IBM are major industry supporters of open-source software and open standards. Smaller players often embrace open standards because they lack the clout to push proprietary products over standardized ones.Thread: Week 7 Discussion 2Post: RE: Week 7 Discussion 2Author: Instructor Manager Posted Date: February 16, 2017 6:52 AMApple is not Apple because of its technology. Apple had to re-visit its culture of business, technology, leadership, production, sales, and revenue. Apple is Apple because of the fervor with which its employees believe in the corporate mission. The culture stems for the dedication of its employees to the consumers. Apple understands what consumers want, it knows how to meet those desires, and it sets out to beat any and all expectations. The culture of producing a great quality product that the employees stood behind was number one. Failures within the company have been out shadow but the strength of its success. Some users find fault in the equipment but are still buyers that upgrades of their complaints. The biggest failure was the lack of leadership that was in place that did not envision the product, technology and all the players behind the development of all their products. Not having the right people, talent, and managers was a major failure that nearly destroyed the entire organization. From the viewing of thee-Activity video and the reading in our textbook about Apple’s cloud capabilities, it is not determined that it is an option that should be made available to a non-Apple device user. The reason for this conclusion is that Apple’s cloud Drive is merely a version of Drop box or Google Drive for which non Apple users can utilize their devices. These options are all cloud-based storage systems that let users share files across multiple devices and apps. As to the limitations of cloud computing, that is still not fully known because cloud is still an evolving technology. It has weaknesses like network connection (as demonstrated in the slow download speed of the document in the e-Activity video), control of data security, peripherals compatibility, and integration problems. Businesses are aware of the limitations with cloud or cloud computing. However, they see clear benefits in shifting to cloud computing. Some companies are adopting it unconditionally while some enterprises are testing the waters by moving only non-critical applications to the cloud. Most businesses, on the other hand, want to wait and see how the technology evolves before deciding.
