“Civil Rights Breakthroughs. From the scenario, identify at least two (2) events of the 1960s which you believe spurred the Civil Rights Movement forward. Explain the key ways in which the events that you have identified supported the movement. Provide a rationale for your response.

African Americans were getting tired of not being granted their fourteenth amendment rights to be protected. Martin Luther King Jr started a series of marches, boycotts, and rides through the south and parts of the North with speeches against racism. “I have a dream” King is noted for and always will. In 1963, 20000 blacks and whites bombarded the Lincoln Center to hear Dr. King’s speech. This speech prompted the Civil Rights Act.

Martin Luther King’s struggle for Civil Rights gained sympathy and support when the public noticed the violent reaction to his non-violent protests. Non-violence was key to civil rights movement. He had six principles and steps to nonviolent Social change.

Principle1: Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people.

Principle2: Nonviolence means seeking friendship and understanding among those who are different from you.

Principle3: Nonviolence defeats injustice, not people

Principle4: Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform people and societies.

Principle5: Nonviolence chooses loving solutions, not hateful ones.

Principle6: Nonviolence means the entire universe embraces justice.

In addition to the six principles he developed a six-step process.

Step 1: Gather Information

Step 2: Educate Others

Step 3: Remain Committed

Step 4: Peacefully Negotiate

Step 5: Take Action Peacefully

Step 6: Reconcile

The alternative to violence is nonviolence resistance. It is a method that challenges all people struggling for justice and freedom. Martin Luther King’s view on nonviolence and equality and his enormous effect on the citizens of America makes him one of the most influential person of the twentieth century.
