Organizational Management and Operations

The criminal justice system is divided into jurisdictions which are federal, state, and local. Every state within the United States has its own criminal justice system with rules, regulations, and many organizations at different levels. The organizations are made up state prisons, law enforcement crime labs, correction offices, and different federal agencies (law.jrank, 2012).In this paper I will identify, compare, and contrast the policing function at the local, state, and federal organizational levels. Analyze how the organizational, management, administration, and operational functions at these three organizational levels are similar or different and why. Identify the leadership characteristics and responsibilities pertaining to each organizational level.

The difference between Local, State, and Federal policing is that they have many different law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions within their organizations and uphold different laws. The three organizational levels have separate jurisdictional limits as well. Local policing is responsible for the incorporated areas within their area they are task. State policing are responsible for the state-wide jurisdiction. Federal policing is responsible for the jurisdiction on all American territory, including territories owned by the United States.

Local Policing deal with municipal, county, tribal, and regional issue and enforce local and/or state laws, and investigate crimes and many other things that are within their respective boundaries. Local Police includes municipal, county, tribal, and regional police that derive authority from the local governing body that created it. The primary purpose is to uphold the

laws of the jurisdiction, provide patrol, and investigate local crimes. (DiscoverPolicing.org, 2015) Local policing can be divided into several administrations levels within their jurisdiction and agency. Local policing involves, arresting, conducting patrols, investigating crimes, enforcing traffic laws, and conducting traffics stop and even patrolling schools during the school day. (law.jrank, 2012). Local policing can come from the City Police department or County Sheriff departments. County sheriff policing duties are almost the same as city policing except they work with the coroners, tax assessors, the executors for criminals (Dempsey & Forst, 2009, Chapter 2).

State Policing involves maintaining law and order across the state jurisdiction, conduct roadways patrols, conduct highway patrols, collect traffic citations enforce state laws, conduct traffic stops, investigate criminal activity and assisting municipal law enforcement when needed and maintaining peace. State policing main role is protecting residents within their state jurisdictions. There are many other responsibilities state policing has, such enforcing laws that include the manufacture or selling of controlled substances, traffic violations, robberies, and breach of contract. In addition, they maintain the centralized identification bureaus and centralized criminal records and wildlife areas.

Federal Policing involves with handling bankruptcy, naturalization, land fraud, fugitives, transportation of people across state lines for immoral purposes, matters that crossed over state boundaries or jurisdictions such as interstate commerce and foreign affairs, long with many other things. Federal policing’s main role is to “uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States to and protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence

threats, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services”. (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2015) There are several different agencies within federal policing, here is the Secret Service, The Department of Justice, The Department of Homeland Security, and The Department of Defense amongst many more. These agencies watch have their own administration levels that play a significate role in the criminal justice system.

Local, Federal and State policing share many similarities they are all responsible for the protection of the citizens of society and the United States. They also all have authority and manage laws of the land, prevent crime and first to respond to an emergency call of a criminal offense or act. The goal and mission of all three components of policing are to protect and serve their country by enforcing laws, bring justice and saving lives. In many cases, the three may cross paths depending on the matter of the crime.

The criminal justice system is divided into jurisdictions which are federal, state, and local. The primary components of the criminal justice systems are jurisdictional, which means it results in a separate federal, state, and local justice systems. Each of the 50 states may have their own criminal justice system and the various organizations within these systems are organized at local levels, state levels, and both state and federal levels. The difference between Local, State, and Federal policing is that they have many different law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions within their organizations and uphold different laws. The similarities are Local, Federal and State policing are all responsible for the protection of the citizens of society and the United States. Each agency carries out their own mission, with the same intent to protect life and property within their respective jurisdictions unless otherwise they are needed elsewhere. All the leaders

of the organizations, know and understand the duties required within the criminal justice system, which is to act as the front line of defense of America.
