Suicides In The Military

The suicides rates in the military has hit a all time high across all branches and suicide rates has double since the last decade and it has seem to slow down. Over half of soldiers who commit suicide in the military suffer from emotional abuse, a stressful deployment and feeling alone. Soldiers feel like by commenting suicide it will end intense emotional distress but in reality everybody gets hurt at the end. The long term effect when a soldier comments suicide is devastating to their friends, family and unit. I think there are some better ways to improve suicide health prevention instead of the same death by power points which seems not to be helping the suicide ratio go down.

When I first got to my unit at Ft.Hood there were 3 suicides within the first three days. We had a meeting in the platoon about suicide prevention and as a unit we were going to have a class about suicide prevention. The meeting took place in a classroom full of power points presentations. Some of the soldiers were nodding off and the other soldiers were on their phone not paying attention. It did not take long to realize the information was outdated but I still paid attention to what was being said. After the suicide prevention class I felt I did not know enough on why the rates are still high and the real seasoning on why soldiers need to feel why soldiers need to comment suicide. The suicide rate in the military used to be lower than the population at large. But in the years following the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, service members began taking their own lives in increasing numbers (B.Hattem 2017).
