Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is the responsibility of all nurses and is vital when addressing the challenges of the health care industry. Provide an example of how you would apply CQI in your current or past position.
According to Huber (2014), the American Association for Quality defines CQI as “a philosophy and attitude for analyzing capabilities and processes and improving them repeatedly to achieve customer satisfaction.” The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality defines CQI as “techniques for measuring quality problems, designing, designing interventions and their implementation, along with process re-measurements” (Huber, 2014, p. 292). An example of how I would apply CQI would be using evidence-based practice to improve patient care by decreasing incidents of pressure ulcer development. I work in a sub-acute unit in a long-term care center and many of my patients are bed bound and require total care. I would decrease incidences of pressure ulcers by making sure the patients at most risk are turned every 2 hours. I would implement a turn and reposition schedule. I would also make sure to use barrier cream to protect the skin and apply it every time the patient gets soiled. I would also perform weekly skin checks, especially over bony prominences, such as the coccyx, hip, head, elbows, and ankles. I would also make sure to use specialty mattresses, positioning devices, use of supportive surfaces, and make sure that everyone follows correct protocol (observation of the skin, frequency of repositioning and postures, use of support surfaces, and elevation of heels) (Beeckman, Clays, Van Hecke, et al., 2013).
