False Confessions of Juan Rivera
CRJ426 Investigative and Forensic Interviewing
Colorado State University Global
The case that I want to present for my project is the case of Juan Rivera. In August of 1992, a young girl was raped and murdered while she was babysitting (Innocence Project, 2017). The victim was 11 year old Holly Staker of Waukegan, Illinois. For many weeks the police had little to go on until a tip about 19 year old Juan Rivera steered the investigation in his direction (Innocence Project, 2017). Rivera was a special education student with a criminal past: he had been convicted of burglary. One of the biggest flaws in this investigation is that Rivera had an ankle monitor on him when the crime against Staker was committed (Innocence Project, 2017). Much of the investigation that took place was incredibly flawed and stands as a great example as to what law enforcement should be avoiding during interrogations.
