Discussion Performance Appraisal System

2-1 Discussion: Performance Appraisal System

A company of 15 employees has recently decided to overhaul its performance appraisal system. Based on the assigned reading, which plan would be most appropriate for the company to adopt? Why?

Respond to at least two of your peers’ comments.

Performance appraisals are formal review systems put in place to evaluate employees’ and teams’ performance over a specific period. Effective performance appraisals rely largely on measurable, quantifiable data such as measures of productivity to ensure fairness across the board. These appraisals serve to evaluate employees’ growth in areas of personal development, providing additional insight for compensation and promotion decisions.

That being said, I would suggest to use a combination of Management By Objectives and Behavior-anchored appraisal:

Also called MBO, is designed to include employees in the goal-setting process and define “success” by measuring accomplishments against a clearly established set of objectives. If managers and employees begin the year by working together to list these objectives, the end-of-year appraisal can simply compare each goal with its final outcome. This method is simple, clear, and empowers employees in the goal setting process but it disregards non-goal-related success metrics.

When you evaluate employees strictly by their behavior, you can measure what they do against what you need them to get done. If you establish performance criteria that benefit your business, you can compare employee performance to your criteria and quickly determine whether or not employees make a positive contribution to your business. This type of appraisal offers straightforward, objective results in a performance evaluation. If you like to lead based on objective standards, you will gain from using a behavioral approach to appraisals.
