The Impacts of Technology on High School Students
Lee et al. argues that technology plays a significant role in the delivery and outlook of most education systems and levels. Modern technology has been able to transform education in how it is delivered and the engagement of the students to learning materials. Technological innovations and applications have been central in the application of new education approaches and avenues through which education can be provided. Technology has significantly improved education and the ability of the students to participate in a global based multi choice education. Most students have embraced technology and included it as a basic factor and avenue to provide for education.
Murphy notes that technology in contemporary education environment is used for various purposes. The primary purpose of technology in the current environment is to engage and promote communication between the student and other key education stakeholders. Technology provides high school children with the choice of how to obtain, generate and manipulate education information. Technology has increased access to information and also improved the choices available for high school children to harness education. Apart from teacher led lessons students can today access online tutors who are able to assist students on various subjects that the student did not get well during normal studies Tseng argue that education has significantly changed the role of the teachers and tutors in our high school education systems. The primary role played by the teachers has changed with the advent of technology which offers students unlimited resources. Teachers’ primary role in most high school institutions is to provide leadership and guidance on how the students can use information made available through technological applications such as online data bases and libraries. The new teacher role in high school education has increased the participation of the students and incorporation of technology.
According to Huang & Hong motivation is an important attribute in the modern education systems, technology plays a significant role in increasing the motivation and engagement of students. Students are showing more accomplishment in technology based education approaches than the conventional academic approaches. Salomon & Kolikant concurs with Huang & Hong that technology is a primary motivator for students to perform better and exemplary in many subjects that were deemed as difficult. Technology has improved the tendency and ability of high school students to work on computational problems. Students have found computer based education programs being more flexible and functional. Computer educational programs are able to provide the students with immediate feedback and results which improves the motivation and self-esteem of the high school students using this educational avenue.
Collaboration and information sharing are amongst many avenues through which high school students can use technology to share information and knowledge. Salomon & Kolikant argue that sharing and networking is a major boost of education motivation in high school levels. Students are able to access and control information that has been used by students from various other institutions to improve their knowledge. Education collaboration is a fundamental approach that can increase students sharing and research. Technology enables high school students to research and compare different information which further promotes participation and performance of the students. In the school and class environment technology has enabled the students to share scarce resources and material the use of projectors to visually share information enables the participation of the students in a conventional education system. Students with special interests such as the disabled and the foreign student are now able to participate in the mainstream education system through the use of assistive technology. Technology can therefore be argued as a bridge point that enables all education stakeholders to come together and share critical information. Social media has enabled high school students to look over each other shoulder by ensuring that they keep each other on check and promote healthy competition which is a necessity in promoting excellence and value in high school education. Through technology high school students can easily participate in extra curricula activities that promote holistic development of the high school students.
According to Tseng et al. high school students use technology for learning, work and leisure activities. Computer use allows for better student time on task. The students show increased attentiveness for longer lengths of time when learning through use of technology. Also, the students are more likely to be engaged in learning during interactive multimedia technology. Another benefit reported in this particular article is computer use as a tool for more individualized instruction for the student. With the many budget cuts in education, class sizes seem to increase. Computers can provide that individual instruction that students need.
In contrast Kwon, 2016 notes that the best way to incorporate technology into the classroom is to add to what is already being done. Technology does not necessarily need to replace something. Technology should be an addition. Computers can address a variety of subject areas at once. One example this article gave was of a fourth grade teacher having a special needs student use Word to type a story. By doing this, the student recognized spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Also, this same teacher found that by having her students use Excel, the students gained a better understanding of fractional parts and proportions.
