Discussion: Assessment program

Assessment can refer to the grading a particular student’s performance in a given test or assignment but it can also mean the process of evaluating an education system to ascertain the quality of ac certain problem and its contribution to learning of students (Paloma & Banta,1999) There is no denying that assessment of students s important in order to test their comprehension, the educational program and their contribution to the growth and development of students but we must understand as much as individual students may be tested the goal of assessment is not to target one student but students as a group.

One of the things that is key in assessment of language is to ascertain how students are doing as it relates to reading skills. There are multiple ways and techniques that a school instructor (teacher) can use to assess the reading skills. One of them is reading comprehension assessment; this is whereby a teacher selects an appropriate text or passage and asks a student to read through then that student is asked some detailed questions about the content of the passage. The child comprehension could be tested by asking him inferential questions about the information implied by the text, he could also be asked to retell the story or to summarize and put the story in his own words. Another skill that could be tested alongside reading comprehension is reading accuracy where a child is expected to read clearly, without mistakes.

Language comprehension is equally important just like reading comprehension and teacher would use almost the same technique however the only difference is that with language comprehension there is no reading that is expected from the student. Everything comes from the teacher verbally and the student is only expected to listen keenly and try to say the meaning of the passage. Some detailed questions can be asked from the text on things such as the moral lesson from the passage, the meaning and that is important because understating the language is key to understanding the text.
