Transforming Learning Into a Learning System

To understand Professional Learning Communities, it is essential to know the tools available. In discussing the seven concepts, I will have a foundation and an idea as to what is a professional learning community and what it takes to put on together. With the ability to understand these concepts and how to compare them to actual examples to help with understanding.

Seven Concepts

Concept Personal Definition Specific Example
Learning Systems At the teacher level, this pattern may be observed in a professional learning community as a group of teachers try to improve the effectiveness of their strategies to teach students division of fractions(Ash & D’Auria, 2013, Chapter Intro). In a strong learning system, the students and teacher benefit, the learning system will help monitor and evaluate the progress of techniques used by teachers. The learning system will also detect shortcoming to help the teachers learn and be able to know what they need from their PLC. Teachers have a goal to help facilitate students to learn in the best possible environment, and with this, the learning systems are set in place to achieve this and also have coaches to help in all areas a learning system can be as simple as the teacher mentor.
Learning systems benefits A learning system benefit has the ability to detect a shortcoming before it goes too far, and the community can come up with an idea to get the student or teacher ontrack. I think a learning system is the MAPS testing that gives the teacher great feedback on how students are doing this system will show teachers and student how to correct theshortfall.
Shared and Distributed Leadership Shared and distributed leadership give a broader view of leadership in that there is more of board leadership in the school rather than just one leader. An example of shared and distributed leadership is in my school, we are a charter school, and our leadership team is divided up between four people, at the top, and then it is distributed through some experienced teachers to help facilitate all and anyissue that arises.
Shared Responsibility Shared responsibility, in my opinion, is a false statement overall, but in an effort to ensure all the needed work in completed and the desired outcome is achieved by more than one person who is a form of shared responsibility. But no matter how many people are combined to achieve the task at hand, there is always one person with the ultimate responsibility for the efforts and desired outcomes. Shared responsibility requires a partnership in learning, moving the role of students along a continuum from passive to active participants in their education(“Shared responsibility,” n.d., para. 2). Shared responsibility is an idea that would go hand in hand to the ideas of developing a vision. It is the principal’s responsibility to make a vision and the shared responsibility to design a vision is a way to include others, and the shared responsibility is when all parties agree to the vision and are then the ones who support and help the vision become a reality. We also need to include the students to share the responsibility to learn the best they can.
Collective Learning (Collaboration) Effective collaboration is built upon the capacity of educators to engage in and resolve conflict(Ash & D’Auria, 2013). Collective learning is the idea that all students learn, and the students are able to collaborate to enhance their learning. Collective learning is a community of people who are learning the same thing no matter what their level is, the goal is everyone learns and takes away as much as possible. A lot like 21st- century skills and the idea of a student-centered classroomcan be considered a collective learning environment.

Professional Learning Community I feel a PLC is a group who has the same goals, a simple goal to be the best educator anyone can. Everyone in the group helps everyone be successful in all that they do. Learning from each other’s experiences. I have a teacher who I worked with, and since she moved to a new school, we still share information and ideas to use in the classroom. As a group, I feel the 3-5 elementary team I have would be my close PLC, and the entire school is there togain insight on who I would consider a PLC as needed.
Synergy Synergy to me is to have the ability to put all efforts together for an outcome greater than the individual desire. This would be when the group decides to go with a particular curriculum, and even though some have reservations, we all stillsupport the collective.

Conclusion

The seven concepts discussed is a way to have a check on learning and instruction for the school. Every one of the concepts is clear in what they want to achieve a learning community that collaborates with each other in an effort to achieve success among the students and factuality. In doing so, it is beneficial to have a shared responsibility and distributed leadership that has the ability to ensure more students and teachers are facilitating the very best educational goals they can.

The two concepts that made the most impact is shared responsibility and distributed leadership. These are new to me on how the information in the text explained it. Being a military veteran, the responsibility was always with the one in charge. The distributed leadership is

somewhat the same with the way the military is set up, but I feel in the educational field the idea is a bit different in that the leadership is more on a flat plane when distributing the leadership.
