  • Ethical Autobiography

Everybody has the chance of experiences a source of inspiration that they apply in their lives to get their goals. I have also a few of sources that relates to my childhood mainly. I belonged to a small town with very limited population but I got a lot of cultural values as well as morals in living this typical small town. Although, I did not get access to outside world when I was young, but I still was able to get a lot of tips from my parents, community and relatives to treat other people in reasonable behaviors that were based upon good ethics and moral values.

Like other people of community, my parents played a significant role in developing good norms and ethics into my personality. My mother was a big source in this regards that mentor me to practice good ethics and my brothers were also told me to respect of everyone that live around of us. The community where I lived and my family learned me a lot for deciding what is right and what is wrong.

I have experienced a lot of ethical behaviors by living in that small town community and I believe they shaped my moral values significantly for my whole of life. The following are the main ethical behavior that I observed in majority of my community and I always tried to adopt these into my personality.

For instance, through all my professional as well as private existence, there is a significant progress into my ethical perspective that assists me abundantly. I consider the development of my ethical perspective due to my curriculum in an inspiring attitude. Moreover, I also observed that my awareness for social and ethical norms has also developed. Furthermore, the education has played its role in guiding principle and magnifying the ethical demeanor. It is highly acknowledge that socially based positive move assist in creating a powerful image in the society. Moral norms, standards and values on the other hand have provided desirable results of a valuable attitude or behavior. All constructive measures lead to the path of success because right and moral strategies are favorable in exercising these constructive measures (Sims, 2003). I realized that ethical perspective urges an individual for the sake his/her concern should not follow un-ethical steps/action. Ethical perspective is a practice that translates the moral approach in contributing its responsibility in a critical way. The practicing as well as following of ethical code of conduct is obligatory in nature. For example a right and moral behavior stimulate to thinks about the request of internal and external stakeholders of the organization. In this way, the ethical perspectives are also considered as social welfare motives of stakeholders. It is beneficial to not follow un-ethical behaviors because these can destruct and dishearten others. To deceive someone for the benefits of oneself or other is not a good norm of behavior (Sims, 2003). It is mandatory that for the application of right and moral values self-concern should be restraint during making professional as well as individual decision makings. In simple words, the ethical achievement provides respect and rewards for observing right conducts.

Heroes play a key role in influencing the lives of people. They provide reference point to others in setting their standards, goals and ways to behave. People perceive them as their role model and want to adopt their ethical values, standards and behaviors, and these serve as a mental templates for acting them into social, economic and cultural situations. To adopt as an ethical hero give them a chance of self-improvement, motivation as well as increase their self-evaluation through assimilation. People like them because they take great endeavors in getting them from tight situations with little heed of perils into which heroes indulge themselves for the welfare of others (Schlenker, 2008). Morgan Freeman is my favorite ethical heroes who like many others, has showed his powerful influence to support cultural, social, political and economic causes. He is well appreciated among public regarding his strong negation of racisms and that’s why he my ethical hero. Freeman believes in eradication of racism, he normally says that the only way to end it is that you ignore it. Although according many civil rights activists, it is drastically contrast with their movements towards racial equality. Although he is criticized among the civil rights activists but regardless drastic effect on his public standing he always creates right awareness about the issue, and want to establish such a society where every can enjoy equal rights. For this purpose he sacrifices himself as a neutral person. According to him racism do not give him peace of mind so I like his attitude of sacrificing own peace of mind person for the benefits of others. His theory on racism is supposed to end it completely rather than to minimize its effects. Many African Americans do not want to get poor quality of life and injustice that they forced to endure as a consequence. Members of every demographic have their different views regarding race, gender, age, as well as economic class and all of them want to eradicate the discrimination associated with these. This is the ideology of the Freeman, who wants such a society where everyone regardless of background can understand the real meanings of racism and can play their role in eradicating it completely (Greene, 2013). On the other hand Freeman stress upon the importance of ethical values to apply in our professional and personal lives. He argues that over the course of life there are some guiding principles regarding ethical values. These values most of the time deals with every aspect of experience of life. While dealing with these values it is necessary to focus on thinking with due care as well as there should be recording of responses for the reasons behind adopting those values. Moreover, it is also important to explain several of moral values while focusing thinking. By the passage of time intuition, experience, and observation shape the cornerstones of one’s beliefs both morally and intellectually. As a result of this respect and compassion there arises welfare feelings for others to help them ethically while dealings with them in their difficulties. When you see others in different crucial situations there is spontaneous reaction from your open heart ethically and in this way there is urged developed for helping others. In professional way, the theory of Freeman can help significantly in dealing with race, gender, economic and political differences in an organization. Where, there could be maintained such a socially acceptable environment that completely suppress racism in any form. I myself take this privilege to not apply racism into my personal as well as professional life. I just observed equal rights of others and dislike racial discrimination or prejudice.

  • Ethical Decision-Making Style:
    • I have experienced four of the individual ethical decision making styles into my personality while living into my community as well in my professional career. The first of these is the individualist decision making which is driven into me by preservation, personal survival and natural reasons. I notice that self is the only criteria to consider one while ignoring others at the moment. On the basis of my cultural values and ethics that I learned since my childhood I realized that it is against the real norms of ethics, so I always try to avoid individuals approach while making decision. While communicating an individualist the others expect that I would mainly emphasis self-interest than others, but I do not like this way of communication. On the other hand, I adopted altruists that mainly concern others while making decision making. This approach is on the basis of good ethical decision making that is totally different than individualist. This approach highly considers others and disregards my own personal security and benefits for the interest of others. During ethical decision making I focus on the reasons that provide high amount of good for others and this is the main mission of adopting altruists. While communication in altruist’s situation I keep in mind the interest of all the stakeholders involved. During my current dealings within my organization I practice pragmatists approach. This approach do not concern for self and others but allow making decision making in the present context of living or working. The current situation guides me to make decision accordingly, or that is suitable to that situation. The last and final way of ethical decision making that I usually apply is driven by ethical principles and rules. The idealists determine the behaviors, moral values and rules of conduct. In an ethical situation idealist tend to display strong and rigid moral standards. When communicating in idealists I strongly focus on principles and duties involved (Iphofen, 2009).
    • The early ethical standards that I learned from my parents, family and community have been reflecting in my professional life as well. While making important ethical decision making in my professional career I consider for example, the interest of stakeholders mainly. Whether, they are direct or indirect, I give them equal importance. The concept of stakeholder has been used widely as a tool for strategic management, for effective function of the business; the role of each and every stakeholder cannot be ignored while making ethical business decision making. I believe a firm can develop sound policies for dealing with stakeholders and ensure that its policies are implemented effectively. For good ethical norms it is necessary that decision making should be in accordance with impartiality, fairness and equity where others experience respect from your side.

The profession and ethical development should be consistent with the deepest values that he/she acquires from his/her cultural norms, way of living, family and community etc. These ethics can be regarded as incomplete until they fit well with what he/she actually do.

From the perspective of business ethical development embodies: standards, norms, and expectations that reflect a concern of major stakeholders, including consumers, employees, suppliers, and competitors. In other words, these stakeholders have concerns about what is fair, just, or in keeping with respect for stakeholders’ rights. The concept of ethical responsibility and social responsibility are the two areas of interest that can best beneficial for professional and ethical development, (Koocher, 1998). Businesses have its contract with customers, vendors and suppliers. There are some explicit rights and obligation enumerated in the contracts, when organization makes it with its customers. Beyond these contracts, Organization has implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing as well as the customers. Courts of the country enforce this ethical obligation. This prohibits parties in the contract to not do anything that make it impossible for both of the parties to fulfill the terms of the contract. The court will rely on the doctrine of equity and it will decide the case based upon the grounds of justice and fairness in case of arising any issues as a result of breach of contract. Therefore, “good faith” is merely the legal establishment of ethics into contractual good faith. Social responsibility is the second ethical standard that can play its role in developing professional and ethical responsibility. To improve ethical development in business context there should be application of social responsibility in a profession. For example, Organization has responsibility of social support to the people it operates directly as well as customers and competitors who may be influenced by the business activities. It is the social responsibility of firm that it should support public interest including its main. By being socially responsible, the entity cannot only meet its ethical obligations, but promote its public image and possibly avoid violating laws. Moreover, following social responsibility can cause a positive flow of work in the country’s economy. In the end I would like to suggest effective ethical ways to consider the interest of all individuals who have their connection with organization. For example firm should seek solutions on the basis of professional ethics that satisfy multiple stakeholders simultaneously. Issues and problems come at managers from many sources, in many forms. Managers need to find ways to develop programs, policies, strategies, even products and services that satisfy multiple stakeholders simultaneously. The firm’s management should apply this policy, and the first step in that process is to actually recognize the need to look for simultaneous solutions for its competitions, suppliers, customers, other authorities etc. The firm should offer its customers great value by having a sustainability mindset in their offer.
