Gender Socialization

Gender socialization can be defined as the process by which people are educated on how to socially behave with respect to their assigned gender based on their biological sex. It is believed that the differences seen in our generation are brought about by the gender socialization. In such process both males and females are told on how to live according to the norms, values, behavior and beliefs of each group. In gender socialization, each group is educated on which roles should be undertaken and what the society is expecting from them. Socialization is mostly affected by the institution an individual is placed (Fivush, 2008).

Family is the most influential institution because a child is nurtured by the parent. Children adopt different gender roles from the family. They also experience their adolescence while still at home and exposed too many factors. Gender socialization is greatly influence in the family because every belief is passed on by the parent. Parents educate their children about gender roles which are beneficial to them but those which may harm their children are rebuked. They orient the children on gender socialization so that they can strictly adhere to the norms and belief of the society (Mackie, 2007).

The school is another institution that has great impact on gender socialization. School is a place where many learners interact and exchange different views.in most government school both girls and boys are enrolled. All students are reinforced to be obedient and adhere to school rules and regulations. They are also told how to struggle in school in order to cater for the competing future but most studies favor boys compared to girls. This is because boys are engaged in the so called ‘hard’ subjects like physics and mathematics. They are also enrolled in difficult carrier because of their studies in school.

According to Mackie (2007) boys are seen have interact more often with the teachers unlike the girls which leads to boys being praised for their achievement in class whereas girls praised for their appearance. if the boys are praised for their hard work they develop a feeling of proud thinking that they are smarter than girls.in school both males and females interact with the teachers as their role model where they tend to look like their teachers in future. They are told how to take care of each other well and gender differences are rebuked as seen there are topics which talk about gender bias and sensitivity.

In addition, media is also affecting gender socialization through the images displayed. Media is also a Centre of gender socialization as the pictures seen shows what the society expects from the people about the sex. They teach people on how they should behave as mothers and fathers. Media also display some entertainment which shows men and women in various situations. These situations educate people on how they should act in different situations and also women doing various activities in the society. Through media, men are shown to be more masculine than women indicating that they are supposed to be tougher in the society (Mackie, 2007).

In conclusion, gender socialization is not influenced only by the above mentioned institutions but also the working areas. These institutions mentor and shape the behavior of an individual to be a better person in the society. Other organizations also shape people to fit in the norms and customs of the society. People are equipped with knowledge and skills on how to perform different activities in the society according to the expectations of the society. Gender socialization also allows both genders to explain themselves feely depending on the skills acquired from the different institutions.
