What, if anything, did you find surprising, particularly challenging, or interesting? (10 pts)
I found it very interesting that mentorship is essential in our daily lives despite how experienced we might be. I learnt that it is a bit challenging to get extremely close with the mentees and have them share their experiences. I also found it challenging trying to mingle with the mentees because they were from different cultures. It was interesting how technology was a form of communication that we all used and had the same thoughts on. It was challenging having to discern and weigh the judgements or advise before sharing them.
It was interesting to discover that personalities have ways in which they influence our leadership skills. I also discovered that in leadership, critical thinking, biodiversity and good communication skills were very important. I learnt that leadership skills were shaped up by service learning which I found the connection very surprising. Leadership was challenging when handling large groups.
From what you know about this course so far, what connections can you make to previous learning experiences, and how do you think this course will help you as you move forward in your college and professional life? (10pts)
One of the connections I made from this course with other learning experiences is that mentorship is very essential in our lives. I learnt that through mentorship, my future would be moulded and my academic performance would improve. This is because mentorship would shape up my future through giving me skills that would perfect my strengths as well as helping me work on my weaknesses. This would prepare me in my professional life as well as my academic life because I will have had some guidance.
According to (Jackson, 2015), group work needs good leadership skills. The several group works I have had have shaped me and prepared me for this class. This is because in this class, group works are frequent and require team work. I am also able to interact with other students in this class and adjust to their different personalities. Some of the students in this class were previously doing some specific units with me. This has made me make new friends who are more determined in performing well.
How do course outcomes (listed above) for this week apply to your experiences so far? (10pts)
The course outcomes apply in my experiences because in my daily interactions with other students and youths at the community service, I am able to mentor or be mentored. I need mentorship in my school work so that I can perform better, in my talent so I can perfect it and also in my work as a volunteer so I can be guided on what is expected of me. I am also able to learn and acquire a variety of skills that are helpful in my academics or will be helpful in future.
Through leadership I am able to work with groups at the organization and fulfill their expectations as well as team work. I have had the opportunity to act responsibly at the organization I volunteer in. The work I was assigned to do, I am able to do them diligently and beating the deadline too. The skills I have learnt in school I am able to use in community service. I have the opportunity to use resources of the company well, thus putting my responsibility skills at work.
What specific ideas did you learn from the Starbucks book this week that you could use in your every life or future career? (10pts)
In chapter thirteen, Schultz goes through privatizing his business again because making it public had more disadvantages and some of the things that were exposed to public led the company to its downfall. He discourages future entrepreneurs from going public because it does not give an entrepreneur peace of mind. It also limits an entrepreneur from making his or her own decisions when the company is going through some hard times.
Schultz in chapter fourteen was able to revive Starbucks and the competition in that time was very stiff. Through this we learn that good competition is essential because great and better ideas come from such pressure. Starbucks changed some of their processes and systems for purposes of handling their information which I learnt that it is very important. This is because we get to accommodate the change.
What questions do you still need answered? (10pts)
