What is Telehealth

Telehealth is defined as “the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support remote clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health, and health administration”. Telehealth technology is evolving rapidly in the health care world and it will only increase with time.

Four Types of telehealh

There are many different types of telehealth technologies in the health care world but there are four main ones that are currently being used. Live Video Conferencing Asynchronous Video also known as Store and ForwardRemote Patient Monitoring Mobile Health.

Telehealth outreach

The telehealth outreach I would most recommend would be Live video conferencing. Using live video conferencing would allow for the health care provider to reach those in rural or remote areas who have little to no health care provider options. It could also be used for simple virtual visits such as follow-up appointments to go over test results or to see how a patient is responding to treatment they were prescribed in an office visit.

Pros of telehealth implementation

As with any technology whether it be for health care purposes or entertainment purposes there will always be benefits and pros and cons. We just hope that the good outweigh the not so good. The pros of live video conferencing are : It allows health care providers to reach their patients in rural areas or who are not able to travel. It’s affordable and health insurance covers it. It can help to fill in the holes in specialist care by reducing or getting rid of the necessity for patients to travel a distance to get access to certified providers. It also brings monetary benefits to the health care system.

Cons to telehealth implementation

The patients worry about their privacy. Training is required to make sure all health care providers are up to date with the technological updates and how telehealth works. Risk of reduced in person visitsSpecialized equipment is needed.
