Short Answer/Term Identification Please provide an explanation of the following terms, identify the terms themselves, and discuss how they are important to the overall changes we examined in lectures and reading.

1. Black Code: These were laws passed in the United States passed by democrat controlled states and ended because of the reconstruction after the civil war. It enacted a series of restrictive rules that that were to restrict black people’s activities to ensure that they worked on labor.

2. The 14th Amendment: It was adopted in on 1968 in US as one of the amendments that addressed citizens’ rights and equal protection of law following American civil war. It granted the citizens equal rights that they had been denied and subjected to slavery.

3. Trusts: this described the levels of things that were entrusted to people in the past.

4. The Panic of 1893: It was a serious economic depression in the United States that began early that year. It was marked by a collapse of a railway overbuilding and shaky railways which caused bank failures. It provided a financial crisis that contributed to economic recession.

5. Settlement Houses: These were important reform institutions in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the United States. They were very large buildings that that were in areas of immigrants. It happened at the peak of First World War.

6. Roosevelt Corollary: It was an addition to the Monroe doctrine articulated by President Theodore Roosevelt after Venezuela crisis of 1982. It stated that all of Latin America was vulnerable to European attack. It resented US involvement and animosity against their large neighbor. It led to US sending troops of invasion to Latin America over 35 times therefore establishing an undisputed sphere of influence through the hemisphere.

7. Spanish American War: This war was fought between the United States and Spain in 1898. It was a conflict that ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americans and finally resulted to American acquiring territories in Western pacific and Latin American.

8. Paternalism: Is the policy of restricting a person’s liberty which is intended to promote their own good.

9. The Berlin Conference: The berlin conference of 1884-85 also known as West Africa conference regulated European colonization and trade in Africa during the period of new imperialism. It was at this meeting that major European powers negotiated and formalized claims to territory in Africa.

10. Reconstruction Acts: The reconstruction acts of 1867 laid out the process of re admitting southern states in to the union. It provided former slaves with national citizenship and granted black men with the right to vote.
