HN44 Unit 4 Assignment Case Study- Portrait of a Single Father

Case Study: Portrait of a Single Father

HN144: Human Behavior and the Environment

Gary’s environment had an influence on his behavior and decision making by changing his mind set at a young age. Gary was poor and uneducated so he felt he was not going to get very far. Gary’s father seems to be an absent parent and Gary’s mom was too busy being drunk with boyfriends and often neglected Gary and his sister leaving Gary to take care of her. Gary often listened to different music than the other kids; Gary’s personal appearance was also different for his environment; and Gary often did drugs which affected how he saw others and himself often making Gary believe that he was too weird to be cared for. Then Gary meets Linda and he feels so grateful to be loved and cared for. When Gary finds out Linda is pregnant he tries to be better but drops out of school to work and marries Linda but still he is miserable with life and just as poor.

Working with Human Service Professionals (HSP) may help Gary change his behavior and decision-making by having someone who will work intimately with him and addressing Gary’s determination and educational problems he was facing. HSP should also be able to help Gary understand his problems and help drive him in the right direction but cannot force Gary to go into the right direction. According to the NOHS Standard One Human Services will help Gary recognize and build on his current strengths, for example if Gary seems to want more money than Human Services may teach the skills for Gary to get a promotion or raise with the burger company.

Ethical standards that I would have when working with Gary and his family are the fundamental values of the human services profession including promoting self-determination and acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness and objectivity as well as STANDARD 3 and 4 Human service professionals protect the client’s right to privacy and confidentiality except when such confidentiality would cause serious harm to the client or others. Human service professionals inform clients of the limits of confidentiality prior to the onset of the helping relationship. (NOHS)

These standards impact how HSP will work with Gary because they are only allowed to do so much to promote Gary to go be determined. If Gary chooses not to take the advice he is able to do so and HSP would have to stand back as long as no one is being harmed. Standards 3 and 4 will make HSP step in if Gary is trying to harm his child, his wife, himself, or any other individual.

The HSP would refer Gary to Alameda County Services if he lived in California in the Alameda County. HSP would tell him to call 211 to get to the help hotline or 510-263-2420 to call to get assistance or send him to https://www.alamedasocialservices.org/public/services/index.cfm if he had a computer. The agency could give him food stamps, medical, and a place for him to live with section eight. These things could relieve some of the pressures from living in such a small home they could also give food stamps so Gary and his family can eat without using their last penny. Hopefully they would be able to then save and eventually get off assistance for those things.

Gary’s case outcome will change drastically from when the epilogue of the case. HSP will be he support and will give him resources he never had in his life before. He will be able to communicate better and possibly and HSP will be sensitive of his needs socially as well as passions and compassion to help Gary reach his goals in life. HSP not being judgmental of Gary will hopefully allow Gary to be able to tell his issues about his wife that he was having and allow Gary to make peace with her and get their relationship back on track as well.
