Identification of a Policy
Social workers greatly help in solving some social problems facing our society today. This paper will focus on the aging out of the foster care system. Statistics show that 23,000 young adults age out each year out of the foster care system (“Health Care of Youth Aging out of Foster Care”, 2012). This being a social problem, a policy has been created and implemented to address it. This paper will focus on whether the identified policy is dictated by the state, local or federal statute, the different aspects of the policy, how long has the policy been in place, who supports as well as who opposes the policy and finally, the amendments or changes that have been made to the policy.
The policy is not dictated by any statute because the foster care unit has its own administration. The federal government is less involved in the foster care system and therefore won’t dictate any policy created to address the social issue. However, it uses some methods to exert influence on the foster care unit.
There are different aspects of the policy. The policy works towards securing adequate housing for young adults once they reach the age of 18 years since that is when independence in adults begins. The policy also focuses on creating employment opportunities for young foster adults for independence purposes. Training in education is also a key aspect of the policy (Patchett & Foster, 2015).
The policy has been in place for close to 1 year and it is bringing out a notable impact on the society.
The policy is supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the policy. It pointed out that the policy brought the hope of a brighter future to the foster children. Some federal institutions opposed the policy with claims that the policy played a key role in contributing to the vulnerability for homelessness.
Some amendments have been made to the policy to ensure that good service is delivered. The policy ensures that, people offering the foster care services are competent, the place in which the services are provided, meet the basic practice and physical standards, the services are available to the young adults who need them and finally, there’s an evaluation of services on a regular basis to ensure that the needs of both the society and the participants are met.
