Information Technology in the Global Economy

Information technology has continued to boost and reshape the world’s economy in this digital era. Information technology is the mother of all major innovations experienced around the globe today. In institutions of higher learning, people specializing in information technology have a lot to translate to the work environment in the context of enhancing the global economy. One of these ways is through taking information technology and particularly the internet to rural areas. Access to the internet around the globe is limited when it comes to those residing in rural areas (Berisha-Shaqiri & Berisha-Namani, 2015). However, various policies could improve this and ensure that there is access to the internet in rural areas.

Consequently, there would be more accessible business communications that would enhance the global economy (Ukwandu & Nnamocha, 2014). For instance, if farmers in a particular area have access to the internet, they will be in a position to determine the areas where their products may go for the highest prices. They are then able to initiate business with those areas and drive competition to increase their buying prices hence growing the economy.

Another way in which information technology can apply to the global economy is through the determination of the hardware and software systems necessary to ensure the success of an organization. Different companies incorporate different hardware, software, and antiviruses. For instance, a hotel will require a separate information system from a hospital. IT professionals provide advice on these, install them, and train other staff on how to use them. When educating the team, they teach on the various policies surrounding the use of these software and hardware — for example, training staff on software usage policies. Organizations must get to understand these policies to ensure that they do not get on the wrong side of the law (Janssen et al., 2015). There are different regulations for different countries. However, there is a standard regulation on privacy. Organizations globally should ensure that they protect data of their clientele and staff from unauthorized access. The IT professional gives insights on passwords and encryption of databases.

Still, on regulations, IT professionals apply what they have learned in class when it comes to formulating information technology policies of different companies. They advise on the CIA triad, which stands for confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data. The issue of privacy has already been discussed above. On integrity and availability of data, they advise companies on the people who should have access to data depending on their various classifications. They also advise on procedures that should be followed when it comes to access to information (Janssen et al., 2015). The global economy is one competitive arena. Therefore, competitors would be willing to do anything within their abilities to ensure that they access their rival’s data. Hence the importance of having such policies for accountability and protection of the company’s assets.

IT professionals also use skills that they learned in class to enlighten companies on the use of big data and analytics to boost the business (Berisha-Shaqiri & Berisha-Namani, 2015). These two fields aid in the analysis of large sets of data to ensure that companies understand trends amongst their clientele. These are becoming increasingly important as companies go global. Consequently, they can forecast sales and enhance competitiveness.
