OPERATING SYSTEMS DESCRIPTION ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Microsoft Windows Windows is the world’s most popular computer operating system. It accounts for almost 90% of the market share, so if you encounter a computer in any part of your daily life, you are likely to encounter the Windows OS. Windows has been around for many years and has gone through many changes and many different stages of growth. Windows is used on everything from government computers, the commercial industry, and many millions of home computers (Bhadane, 2015). Due to its popularity and size, Windows offers many great advantages. Some advantages of using Windows include it compatibility with almost any application, driver, or game offered. Windows offers great technical support, again due largely to its popularity, there are plenty of people to offer help with any issues you may encounter. Lastly, Windows offers great functionality to accomplish almost any task you could think to accomplish with a computer (Bhadane, 2015). While its size and popularity offer many great advantages, it can also bring on some disadvantages to using Windows. Because it is so large and has such an expansive user base, hackers and viruses are a constant threat to Windows as it would affect more users than attacking other smaller operating systems. Another disadvantage to Windows is also caused by something that can make it great, its features. Because Windows offers so many different features to make a computer useful, it can also slow it down making it irritating to use. These features require a lot of computer resources, thus, making it slower (Bhadane, 2015).
macOS Apples macOS is one of the longest running operating systems available. It precedes Windows by just one year. It is considered the first ever successful graphical based operating system. MacOS is the sole operating system used on Apple computers and will not be found on any other non-tampered devices out there (Bhadane, 2015). Due to the fact that it is built and designed by Apple for Apple computers, it offers smooth operation with less glitch. Advantages to Apples macOS are that due to its smaller user base, Apple Macs get almost no viruses. That is not to say that they do not exist or that it does not happen, but it does happen less often. Because Windows has such a large market share, Windows is a more likely target for viruses or hackers. MacOS offers great reliability. This is due to the fact that because this OS is only ran on Apple computers, it is less prone to hardware or software crashing (Bhadane, 2015). Like any other system, macOS has it draw backs. One huge disadvantage to Apples macOS, is that Apple computers are very expensive, thus, making getting this operating system very expensive. A second disadvantage to macOS could be that if you already have a computer that is not an Apple but you wish to use this OS, you will not be able to install it and use it because it is used solely on Apple computers. One last disadvantage to macOS is that there are many applications and games available to other operating systems that are not compatible and will not run on this OS (Bhadane, 2015).
Linux Linux is another operating system offered as an alternative or answer to macOS or Windows. Linux came around some years after macOS and Windows and it’s a different type of OS and has become very popular over the past few years. Linux is considered a kernel, and requires other software to be installed in order to run. The kernel was created by Linus Torvalds who made it available to the world for free and invited other programmers to add to the kernel so long as they made their contributions for free (“What is Linux and why is it so popular?,” 2000). The most obvious and useful advantage of Linux is that it is completely free. It can be downloaded, installed, used, and modified all without paying any money. Secondly, because Linux is a kernel that requires other software in order to operate, it offers a great deal of variety based on user preference. Users can decide which other software they would like to pair with the Linux kernel to best suit their needs. Lastly, like macOS, due to its small size, the Linux operating system is far less prone to viruses than Windows (Bhadane, 2015). Disadvantages to Linux can include the fact that because it is not a complete operating system, it can be a bit complicated for the average user to operate. Linux requires a greater deal of computer knowledge in order to get it to work properly. Another disadvantage to Linux is that due to its popularity, its compatibility with applications, software, and games is limited. Lastly, you will not find many, if any, Linux based computers for sale by vendors. Most users end up buying a Windows based computer, reformat the hard drive and install Linux themselves (Bhadane, 2015).
Apple iOS Apple iOS is the operating system that runs Apple products such as Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod and the Apple Watch; which uses a special version of the operating system. Apples iOS is used solely on Apple products and is not allowed to be installed or used on any third party systems. Applications for iOS are offered through Apples own “App Store” directly to any Apple device running iOS (“Mobile operating systems – what are they and which is best?,” 2016). For the person who wants a simple running operating system with great benefits, a huge app store, and smooth operation; while not being overwhelmed with a huge number of over the top features, Apples iOS is great. Apples iOS is one of the most popular mobile operating systems offered. The system is known for working seamlessly between multiple devices and afford great benefits and ease of use right out of the box. iOS offers excellent camera and video recording features as well (Singh, 2018). On the other hand, if you are a person who wants a phone with an operating system full of features, gadgets, and widgets, Apples iOS may not be for you. Some disadvantages of iOS are that it is not very highly customizable and it can be costly. The look of the OS cannot be changed very much and while there are millions of free apps within the App Store, some apps that you may see for free under Android, will cost on iOS (Singh, 2018).
Android OS Android OS is an operating system owned by Google and is powered by the Linux kernel. Android OS is extremely popular due to the fact that it is open source which allows developers to access hardware and develop different applications as they wish in order to create new programs for users (“Mobile operating systems – what are they and which is best?,” 2016). It is one of the world’s largest operating systems overall and is the largest mobile operating system in the world (Android challenges windows as world’s most popular operating system, 2017). Android OS has many advantages due to the fact that it is an open source project and gives users lots of options. It is a highly flexible OS that lets users decide which app to action what (Singh, 2018). Also due to the fact that Android is open source, it allows unlimited access to anyone who would like to develop apps and places less restriction on licensing than other mobile operating systems. Android allows users to customize their phones with multiple home screens, widgets, and apps that will give you quicker access to content and data that users care about most (“Mobile operating systems – what are they and which is best?,” 2016). Like any other operating system out there, Android OS has its disadvantages. With the operating system being so jam packed with so many different features, apps, and widgets, it can be overwhelming to operate and sort through all of the options. People who like simplicity and easy operation, may find Android to be a bit much. Also, with so many features having to possibility of running at the same time, the system can sometimes be slowed or operate in a glitch manner. Lastly, since Android is tied to Google, its reliability relies solely on them (Singh, 2018).
Windows Phone Windows Phone in the mobile operating system released by Microsoft. It had been revamped in late 2010 after falling behind iOS and Android. Windows Phone is very recognizable to many users as it mirrors Microsofts Windows operating systems that is used largely on PC’s all over the world (“Mobile operating systems – what are they and which is best?,” 2016). Windows Phone OS is great for users who are familiar with PC versions of Windows and enjoy its methods of operation and distinctive look. Advantages of Windows phone include a tile based interface that allows users to remove and interchange square sections of the home screen based on preference. It comes with aggregators called “hubs” that will group all photos from different applications such as camera and Facebook, and groups them all together in one location to be seen. These “hubs” can also do this with other items such as documents and music, making it easy to access different data from multiple locations with ease (“Mobile operating systems – what are they and which is best?,” 2016). Though revamped in late 2010, Windows Phone does fall behind Apples iOS and Googles Android, and lacks the large user base that these others offer (“Mobile operating systems – what are they and which is best?,” 2016). Other disadvantages of this operating system are that it does not offer or support the same wide range of applications that the others do. Lastly, due to its lack of popularity, smartphphne options based on this operating system are very limited compared to other operating systems (Singh, 2018).
