LOG401 INTRODUCTION TO GLOBAL LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT

FedEx, with its headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, provides customers and businesses worldwide with a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services. They have a workforce of more than 300,000 team members worldwide and have annual revenue of $44.3 billion.

FedEx processes and ships daily more than ten million shipments for express, ground, freight, and expedited delivery services. They serve more than 220 countries and territories, including every address in the United States. To deliver these shipments FedEx has 1,200 stations, 10 air express hubs, 33 ground hubs, over 500 pickup and delivery terminals, 355 services centers, offices in over 1,800 locations, 647 aircraft, serve more than 375 airports worldwide, and have more than 90,000 motorized vehicles.

With such a large workforce and the many moving pieces that it takes for FedEx to deliver a package quickly and with a purpose is what is interesting. The logistics alone to keep the company moving and not having any delays or losing a package is a feat in its own. Keeping track of their own equipment and supplies as well as that over their customers and maintaining a high customer satisfaction rate is surreal.

The logistic functions of FedEx are to ship goods from one supplier to the business and/or customer. With this involves the mass movement of goods and supplies from one facility to another. Good communication and information flow is vital in order for these items to flow through the system flawlessly.

Of course keeping track of every package, coordinating the movement of all these packages, and maintain their fleet of vehicles and aircraft is of no small task. By using technology FedEx makes this process look simple. FedEx relies heavily on technology to keep their service a float. Without it they would not be so successful and packages would not be able to be delivered in a timely manner. According to FedEx.com “Over 32 million unique visitors monthly; more than 6.5 million package tracking requests daily and more than 20 million labels generated via FedEx Ship Manager monthly” (FedEx, 2013).

FedEx not only caters to the end user, they also cater to businesses that need assistance with logistical support. For instance, they can help a small business connect to a larger audience by providing them with visibility of inventory flowing through there supply chain, reduce unnecessary high inventory levels, utilize accurate and updated information on management reports, have supply chain transparency with real time tracking (either in storage or in transit), enhance customer service, and reduce warehousing costs.

Of course FedEx accomplishes this by using their existing air, ground, and IT networks. These together will provide the business logistical and distribution solutions to which in turn will help the business become competitive , not only the domestic economy, but also in the global economy if so chosen.

FedEx is a global corporation that has a lot of moving pieces and specifically deals with logistics. They can ship goods and help small businesses with their needs. With all the moving pieces FedEx does all this with effiencey and as quickly as possible.
