Functions of Management   Skills Needed
PlanningWhat type of planning activities will you need to use as a manager? Some planning activities that I find to be most useful as a manager are forecasting, contingency planning, goal setting, and benchmarking. I find forecasting to be very important because this can help with predicting what may happen in the future. This, of course, needs to be used with caution, but forecasting can be beneficial when it comes to planning for certain things in the company. Contigency planning is great to use because this will help to have a back up plan in the case of our initial plan failing or having flaws. I feel that goal setting can be the most important activity because having goals set really helps a company to develop what needs to be done to reach these goals. Lastly, I would plan to use benchmarking. Benchmarking can really help to ensure the company is not lacking or getting too comfortable with how things have been going. Benchmarking would allow us to see what outside companies are doing and how these tactics may benefit our company. Review planning activities from the textbook to help describe the planning process you would use as a manager. As a manager, the skills that are needed for planning is the ability to be open and listen to new ideas. This is important as a leader in the planning process, as you need to have the ability to get ideas from your team or other people around you to better the company. I also need to have the ability to set goals, both short term and long term, along with setting a contingency plan. Goals is extremely important in any planning process, so having these skills will help in making sure that my team will be successful overall. Ensuring that there is a contingency plan is important in the case that an original plan fails, so I need to have the ability to develop a backup plan in the case that something goes wrong or needs to be changed.
OrganizingHow will you use organizing as a manager? As a manager, I find that using an organization chart would be most helpful when it comes to organizing people and tasks. With this chart in place, everyone can see what their assigned tasks are and how they may be working cohesively with other associates. It could also be beneficial to use informal structures, at times, when looking to connect associates in different departments to help them learn new jobs or to solve problems. It is important to me that everyone work together, even if they are in different departments, as we all have one common goal. Review organizing approaches from the textbook to help describe the organizing approaches you would use as a manager. I find that one of the most important things is that my team understands what tasks they need to complete daily. To ensure that the team understands these daily tasks to be completed, I would hold a meeting weekly to go over the flow chart that is created. Going over the flow chart would show how we are organizing our time and activities for each day of that week to ensure we are meeting all our deadlines. Organizing time for associates of different departments to work together so that everyone better understands the issues we are trying to resolve is also very important to me, so I want to make sure there is time that can be set aside for this at least once a month, if not more.
LeadingWhat type of leadership characteristics do you want to demonstrate? As a leader, there are many characteristics that I find to be very important. One of the most important characteristics is the ability to inspire and motivate my team. When you have the ability to inspire and motivate people, they look up to you more as a leader or role model type figure. This helps a leader because their team truly looks up to them and aspires to be them, at least in the work field. I also find it very important to be open and honest with my team. Being open and honest as a leader shows that you are trustworthy and dependable. It also shows that you are open to listening to the ideas of others. Review leadership characteristics from the textbook to help describe the leadership approaches you would use as a manager. As a leader, I would motivate inspire my team by influencing them to achieve the shared goals. I would mentor my team so that they feel how we are all on the same team and that I support them in their growing and learning. I would also be open and honest so that my team knows that I am trustworthy, dependable, and open to hearing their feedback or ideas. I want my team to feel that they are apart of the bigger picture and that I truly care about what they feel or have to say about what we are working on, as they are what keeps everything running.
ControllingWhich controlling techniques would you use to measure performance? As a leader, you are always having to check the results and compare them to the goals that have been set. This helps to make sure everything is on track, or if adjustments would need to be made. I would definitely use concurrent controls and feedback controls as a leader. Concurrent controls would be useful to ensure employees are consistent when it comes to the quality standards. Controlling in this way would provide review of performance as it is taking place. Feedback controls would be used to review of information to determine if employee performances are meeting standards. Review controlling techniques from the textbook to help describe the controlling approaches you would use as a manager. As a manager, I feel that concurrent controlling would be most useful to ensure that employees are being consistent when it comes to their performance. This control method is very useful because corrections are able to be made as the work is being completed. This would allow me to be a hands on manager, without being a micro-manager. I would use this as a way to teach the employees what needs to be corrected upon, so that they are able to make adjustments. I also like to use feedback controls because this is a good way to review the performance and if any adjustments may need to be made overall moving forward. Feedback controls are very helpful after doing a large project or for things such as an annual review. This will allow me to review the overall performance of the employees and provide them with feedback on what they are doing well on, along with changes that they could improve upon moving forward.
