Minimizing Modifications for Individual Students

Minimizing Modifications for Individual Students

Evaluate how the video has strengthened or otherwise changed your views about differentiated instruction? Do you have a deeper understanding and appreciation for differentiated instruction now? Why/ Why not?

I have learned from this video that applying differentiated instruction to my curriculum will benefit all my students. The video has opened my eyes to how to deliver UDL and as well as there is going to always academically diverse students in not only in my classroom but every classroom.

Yes, I have a deeper understanding and appreciation of differentiated instruction. Appreciation is knowing when and how to apply it correctly such as including it to the entire lesson instead of applying it just here and there. I need to learn to apply knowledge for all my students so that they are engaged and become active learners by seeing, doing, and thinking just as Ms. Rachel stated in the video.

Analyze the benefits for both students and the teacher when instruction follows the UDL framework when compared to the practice of isolating learners and planning for specific modifications for individual students.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individual equal to learn. UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone – not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs (UDL, 2014).

As a future educator, UDL will make teaching simple to address and reach all my student’s needs. The hard part is going to make lessons that will apply UDL to all learners at the beginning but will get easier when I get to know all my student’s needs. With 21s Century learning and technology, my students will have the greatest benefit learning all skills to be ready for the real world.

Discuss what you learned in the video about setting up a non-threatening learning environment that does not isolate students. For example, what connections can you make between this and what you observed when analyzing the lesson during Week Three and when evaluating the example or resource in the Week Four Discussion 1.

I have gained insight that to teach is including UDL in every lesson plan. The teacher said it best in the video, “If you think it and do it every day, it will become first hand to perform it.” As teachers, our main concern is the safety and the education of all our students. I want my students to feel free to ask questions, make choices, and secure in their environment. The connections that I have made from my previous assignments is to eliminate distractions and teach the class as one. I should never assume that a student cannot do an assignment due to academic or physical struggles but all the student to perform and work at their rate with assistance if it is required. The overall method is to teach the class as one whole group to teaching in sections. This will remove singling out struggling students.
