MT140 – Introduction to Management

Four Functions of Management

Planning – Specifying the goals meant to be achieved. This information is vital. Consider the present situation, anticipate future changes, determine what the goals are and how to achieve them.Organizing – Gathering and coordinating resources necessary for achieving goals laid out in planning sessions. Includes gathering appropriate people, finances, information, and authority for the team.Leading – Stimulating the team to work in the direction of the stated goals. Includes motivating, incentivizing and communicating with the team on how the projects are coming along.Control – Examining the progress of the team and seeing how it matches up with a timeline, so resources are not wasted. Corrective action can be taken, if necessary, to get things back on track.

Applying Management Functions

A melding of the four functions. Not likely accomplished in a linear fashion.Typically worked on as a continuum with ever changing features.Managers not always adept at each function.Inability to navigate all four can result in failures in one portion of the project. Can be trained to work at all functions and should seek training. Can be used in other aspects of life.Used in creating and finishing home projects.Increases professional and personal effectiveness, develops talents and skills in other areas.
