The Vark Questionnaire: Analysis of Learning Style

Strategies for learning styles differ for each and everyone. To some, visual learning style is the best strategy, whiles others find aural learning style the best approach. This simply identify how people adapt to different learning strategies. VARK, meaning Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic, which stands for the various learning strategies. It is a tool designed to assist in determining one’s learning style. According to VARK, Multimodal learning style includes: Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. The learner combines all four learning styles to achieve the best from learning. Aural learning style, focus on being present in class and participating in daily class activities and discussions to attain the best from learning. Read/Write learning style focus on written words to understand information. Kinesthetic learning style focus on the senses such as sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing and real things to attain the best from learning. Visual learning style focus on different signs, formats, fonts and colors to note important points and not actual pictures or videos on screen (VARK, The Guide to Learning Styles).

SUMMARY OF MY LEARNING STYLE AND PREFERED LEARNING STRATEGY

VARK questionnaire concludes that my learning preference is multimodal, with the score of Visual 16, Aural 13, Read/Write 16, Kinesthetic 15 (VARK, The Vark Questionnaire). I agree because, I mostly incorporate the various strategies in learning. For a example, it is easy for me to recall what is been read rather than what is been heard, and prefer reading a story rather than listening to it. Although multimodal strategy is my universal learning style, visual and read/write learning styles is my main prefered strategy among all four. Truly people are talented at different things. The theory of multiple learning style by Howard Gardner reflects on my learning style. The theory of multiple intelligence suggest that there are different intelligence profile of which each person has a unique combination. Dissimilar to the understanding of intelligence, people carry a uniformed cognitive capacity that can be easily evaluated by a short-test. It is never the same for two individual (Howard, Gardner). VARK questionnaire has made me aware of my learning preference and suggested several concept to utilize in my learning. How pleasant it is that not only myself will benefit from VARK assessment but my knowledge of the types of learning styles will impact on my patient as well. This will help to choose the right learning material and atmosphere for my patient and make teaching successful and fun.

AWARENESS OF INDIVIDUAL LEARNING STYLE AND INFLUENCE ON TEACHING

Teaching becomes effective when the teacher is aware and understand the individual learning styles. As the teacher becomes more familiar with various learning styles available and being portrayed by different individuals, accommodation and resources to make learning easy and successful will be implemented accordingly. As we all know, a teacher must learn first, in order to teach the learner. So taking time to learn about the learning strategies enables the teacher to take different approach to assist every student in the classroom to effectively learn the material (Wilson, 2011). Learning improves if learners and teachers realize how they study and what their learning styles are thus, recognizing the learners learning strategy equip teachers to arrange their directives according to their learners individual needs.

AWARENESS OF INDIVIDUAL LEARNING STYLE AND INFLUENCE ON THE LEARNER

To the learner, a conducive learning atmosphere that includes the right learning material and resources yields to attentiveness in class, active participation, asking of appropriate questions when the need be, and grasping of what is being taught to generate better result. The VARK questionnaire assist the learner to understand his or her special learning style and the goal is to have the learner prepare towards any learning situation. As the foundation of performing well in learning depends on the learners input, it is imperative that the learner becomes familiar with VARK learning strategies for a better study outcome.

CONCLUSION

Every individual has a different way of learning. Educating our learners about the various learning strategies can help learners get enthusiastic about the subject, explore and comprehend the facts, enjoy tackling the result, and most importantly, be more willing to put what they have acquired into action. The VARK questionnaire for learning strategies is created to assist both learners and teachers to attain a better teaching and learning outcome. The awareness of the individual learning styles by the teacher makes teaching effective, and for the learner, learning becomes easy which aids in excellent result. Therefore, teachers and learners must be informed of their learning styles and should incorporate various learning styles into their teachings. Learners and teachers can stimulate their own learning if they know what their learning styles are. Moreover, self-confident is gained when learning strategy is identified.
