Evidence-Based Nursing Practice

What is the main issue for your organization in addressing a solution to evidence-based nursing practice? Discuss what might be the first step in addressing and resolving this issue.

A main issue for my organization, Temple University Hospital, in successfully carrying out evidence-based nursing practice is insufficient preparation in their nursing education. There are many nurses who have not had the opportunity, or chose not to, embark on a program to obtain further research and leadership courses for nursing. These courses are integral in the preparation of nurses to be able to successfully lead others in adopting EBP in their care of patients and utilize judgment and critical thinking in their nursing positions. Without these courses, some of the nurses at Temple University Hospital do not possess the tools to analyze and critique research and evidence to improve their practice and enhance patient care and outcomes. I feel the the first step in addressing and resolving this issue is for those in hospital management or mangers in specific departments to encourage nursing employees to enroll in bridge RN-BSN programs. Some hospitals have contracts with local schools to help nurses make this transition, as utilizing EBP in health-care environments is one of the five core competencies.
