NUR 3655 – Culture in Nursing Practice

1. In your own words discuss the empirical framework of the Purnell Model and what are the purposes of this model.

The Purnell model is based on a method of organization and assumption. This framework provides a basis for health-care providers, educators, researchers, managers, and administrators in all health disciplines to provide holistic, culturally competent, therapeutic interventions; health promotion and wellness; illness, disease, and injury prevention; health maintenance and restoration; and health teaching across educational and practice settings.

The model has some purpose such as teaches concepts and characteristics of culture to the staff that offers health services and facilitates health care with awareness sensitivity and competence for the interpretation of the characteristics of culture promoting congruence.

2. Please mention and discuss the macro aspects of the model.

Macro aspects of the models are family, community, global society, and person.

Family: Two or more person who are emotionally involved, whether they live together or not.

Community: Groups of people who have the same interests and identity; that go beyond the physical environment including social and symbolic characteristics that allow people to connect.

Global society: All system of politics, communication system, commerce and economics, events and technologies and the way these global systems shape the person’s worldview form the global society.

A Person: is a bio-psycho-cultural being that constantly adapts to the community.

3. What is the role of the head of household and genders according to this model?

The first two assumptions are that the household head is mainly responsible for the economic well-being of the household, and that women relative to men are disadvantaged in accessing society’s economic resources and opportunities. The prevalence of female-headed households is examined according to area of residence, age and education of household head, type of household and the API level of the household.

4.  In your own words define the domain biocultural ecology and discuss one variation of this domain.

Variations in ethnic and racial origins, such as skin color and physical differences in body stature; genetic, hereditary, endemic. Biocultural ecology domain is important to know and what key information it can provide you for caring for your patient.
