Leadership experience

This week’s experiences included attending a regional safety huddle with my preceptor. This briefing included a video conference call between three other hospitals in the region and included the manager of each department within each facility. Each department manager reported any safety concerns, safety events resulting in an injury, near misses and any actions to correct the concerns at this meeting. The perioperative department reported only one issue regarding specimens and the event on mislabeling of blood specimens. My preceptor was still in the investigating process and asked for an extension on reporting the results of the issue. The rest of the day I shadowed the operating rooms business manager. His responsibilities are to the financial aspects of the operating room, from materials and supplies to staffing and surgeon block times. Following him and understanding the costs of managing a department consuming well of a million dollars of supplies per month and how it translates into potential profit for the institution was very educational as well as an eye-opening experience. The financial responsibilities and benefits of this perioperative department is potentially a blessing and a curse. The success of the department is supported by the staff and their ability to execute and follow their leader’s effort is critical to their sustainability.

Lead by example

A good leader may have many characteristics making he or she a person people want to follow. I personally value leaders who are a servant to others and have a focus on establishing a team culture as well as showing equality to all. Being a servant to all may encompass serving the nursing industry and a leader may focus on contributing towards the profession. A strong leader may mentor or become involved with advocating for others with holding positions or volunteering at various nursing professional organizations (Jakubik, Weese, Eliades & Huth, 2017). This is a form of giving back to the profession is similar to serving others. Another strong trait in nursing leadership is emphasizing a team environment. Teamwork is essential in nursing to promote unity, cohesiveness as well as obtaining organizational goals. Leadership is needed to facilitate followers or team members to attain such goals and the leader ultimately takes responsibility for the team or department (Ulrich, 2017). Equality within a department can be demonstrated in various ways. A leader who can remove segregation from the environment they are responsible over may be an admirable and or a favorable leader. As a leader, utilizing equality as a trait can promote the development of a strong culture of empowerment to individuals in the department and bring success to an organization (Thompson, 2015).

Example and Influence

Reflecting on the issues of example in the video for this week, I have learned of examples coming from all aspects of our culture. The video speaks of breaking the four-minute mile and when it occurred it influenced many more to follow. The leader or trailblazer in this circumstance set a goal for future generations as well as accomplishing a task people believed to be unobtainable. Jesus gave us many qualities to follow as an example of being Christ-like. He is compassionate, forgiving as well as standing up for others. The word example is utilized in several books, chapters and verses in the holy bible because Jesus influenced each person to whom he taught. In first Corinthians (11:1 NIV) the word is told to follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. Peter (2:21 NIV) said, and to this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. Jesus paved a path for many followers to live and to set examples for others in their surroundings. As we continue to study the words of Christ, we have the opportunities to become the example or leader to our future generations.

Another reflection from the video I am newly absorbing is the concept of not sweating the small stuff or in this case the opposite. I recognize the importance described in the small stuff as they can lead to the details of various circumstances. The details are important to express and or display integrity, in other words the small stuff are commonly necessary for the foundation of many things. Small things like serving others first are critical in the leadership we are experiencing throughout this program. When we have a strong grasp of the servant leadership principles we may become the examples Christ has envisioned for us as leaders in our profession and most importantly in this life as people living together.
