“Infant, toddler and preschooler’s brains are genetically programmed to develop most effectively when exposed to an environment that has remained largely unchanged over the past tens of thousands of years. Early childhood was characterized during this period of our evolution by specific types of social interaction, including language exposure, social experiences leading to an understanding of self-awareness and one’s role in society, as well as virtually limitless opportunities for physical play, imaginative play and creativity.

What are your thoughts about young children’s exposure to electronic media?

In this day and time children are more involved with televisions and electronics than with human interactions. Children do not learn socializing skills from such devices and that has created a generation of lazy and disrespectful children. Children have become rude and uncaring by some of the media they are exposed to, this media promotes violence and disrespect for others. I totally understand that parenting today is hard especially for the single parent.

What are the pros and cons of exposure to television, computers and mobile devices, and video games? “Cartoons and many children’s shows are filled with images of violence, research shows that exposure to this type of programming increases the risk of aggressive behavior and desensitizes children to violence.” (Pantley, 2011) Today the video games also promote violence and are so life like children begin to think it is alright to go around shooting up people because they are doing this on their game systems. Children spend more time on such devices and less time studying or socializing with others and this effects their communication skills and they also are not learning the information that will help them succeed in adulthood.

How much and what kinds of TV viewing do you think are appropriate for a child in the early childhood stage (ages 2–6 years)?

Children over the age of 2 should only be permitted to engage in TV watching for no more than 2 hours a day. If it was up to me children of this age would not be aloud to watch any, I would encourage ore physical activities and outside play along with board games and other learning games.
