What role does the DSM-5 play in clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment?

The DSM-5 is a handbook that is used health care professionals. This is an imposing guide to the diagnosis of many mental disorders. This contains the descriptions, symptoms, and also other criteria for identifying these mental disorders. This helps to provide a common language for clinicians to communicate about patient’s and come up with a diagnosis that can be used to research findings and also clinical concerns.Decisions to include a diagnosis in DSM-5 were based on a careful consideration of the scientific advances in research underlying the disorder, as well as the collective clinical knowledge of experts in the field. It also provides a common language for researchers to study the criteria for potential future revisions and to aid in the development of medications and other interventions. Many of the changes in DSM-5were made to better characterize symptoms and behaviors of groups of people who are currently seeking clinical help(Corner, 2014, 2011, 2008, 2005, by Worth Publishers, Chapter 3).

What is an example of abnormal psychology that you have seen in your community?

A 32-year-old man complains that his thoughts are being repeated in public and on television and that he is being tortured by invisible rays. He claims that people living in the apartment above him are transmitting abusive messages through the heating system. At times he stares into the mirror, grimacing horribly. He often shouts nonsense words and phrases, seemingly from nowhere, and laughs loudly for no apparent reason. He screams at people walking by him on the street. His family takes him to the hospital after he begins pounding on the walls of his apartment, screaming nonstop.

However, some people need to be admitted to hospital for a short time. This is sometimes done when the condition is first diagnosed so that treatment can be started quickly. Hospital admission may also be needed for a while at other times if symptoms become severe. A small number of people have such a severe illness that they remain in hospital long-term.
