A Diagram and Description of the Function of the Somatosensory Cortex

Somatosensory CortexCutaneous SensesResponsible for perceptions such as touch and pain that are usually caused by stimulation of the skin.Proprioception The ability to sense the position of the body and limbs.KinesthesisThe ability to sense the movement of the body and limbs

Somatosensory System/Cortex

Helps the body to perceive pain. Relays information regarding touch and temperature as well

8

Pleasure A feeling of happiness, enjoyment, and satisfaction.PainA distressed feeling caused by intense or damaging stimuli.

How do we perceive Pleasure and Pain?

Individuals with cutaneous damage experience various stigmatizations such as:1. Constant stares from other people2. Avoidance from other people3. Fear from other people because they fear possible infection.4. Disgusting looks and attitudes from other people5. Embarrassment, shame, depression low self esteem, impaired personal relationships (Schmid-Ott, 2010) (Batalla, A, et al, 2012).
