Week # 3 – Mediation in SPSS

For this week 3 application 1 we are going to be using the data set named USW1_RSCH_8260_statsAnxietyAdvQuant. sav file. This week assignment will make emphasis in mediation. According to Warner (2013) mediation in statistics is the third variable or the variable that helps understand the impact that the main independent variable has with the dependent variable or criterion. Green and Salkind (2015) stated that “mediation explains the effect between internal and external factors. For the data set that was selected the research question will be:

The variables selected are: Fear of asking for help (Fear_Dich) and Motivation (Motivation) as the independent variables and GPA (GPA) as dependent variable. A regression analysis will be run using the Barron and Kenny Approach. In the first step we analyze the regression between (Fear_Dich) and (GPA) these two variables are not significant when we run the regression model test, F(1, 333) = 0.76, p = .784. The second step we analyze the regression and coefficient among (Motivation) and (GPA) the results F(1, 333) = .304, p = .582 in the coefficient it tells us that motivation have a negative impact concerning GPA (see appendix output) because contras of the coefficient of .012 in step one in the second analysis that coefficient was -.001. In the third step of the Barron and Kenny approach we analyze the regression among (Fear_Dich) as our predictor and (Motivation) as the constant or DV in this analysis the results as following, F(1, 333) = .446, p = .505. Finally at the last step we analyze the two independent variables (Fear_Dich) and (Motivation) and the impact it has on (GPA)when we observed the results F(2, 333) = .184, p = .832 we can conclude that a difference exist because taking into consideration that the p value is greater than the standard alpha level of .05 the evidence is not statistically significant and it does not provide enough evidence to support that motivation has an effect in the increase of GPA, on the contrary we can conclude since the coefficient is -.01 we can conclude that the high level of fear of asking, might decrease motivation having an influence on GPA. The implication for social change is that motivation should have a greater and positive influence on students’ GPA and at the same time have an impact in reducing the fear of students to ask for help.

  • Does the high level of fear for asking for help, might increase motivation influencing students’ GPA?
